Introduction

Welcome to the Terrarian Alchemist’s Handbook! This little book will teach you everything you need to know about the various herbs, fish, and other alchemical materials found within your world, as well as what kinds of potions you can make with them.
Please note that you should memorize the Guide Guidebook™ before reading this.
Whether your intention is to make only a few specific potions in order to best a beast or to master the vast art of concocting magical liquids that can buff you into perceived godhood, this handbook will lead you to the answers to all your questions, as well as any questions your Professional Adventurer™ may have for you.
There are potions for improving your defenses, boosting your offensive prowess, and helping you complete tasks more quickly. If you want to race across the world, there is a potion for speed! If you would rather teleport to a friend, there is a potion for that! If you feel like mining is slow and boring, there is a potion that can cause your arms to work like a well-oiled machine! If you never feel sleepy at night and yet feel tired of the world being so dark, there is a potion to help you see!
So hang on to your bottles, because here we go!

…But first, a few warnings:

  • Potions are not to be used as your primary source of sustenance. You may not need to eat or drink, but potions should not be the only things you ingest. Take care of your bodies! This is, after all, one of the top reasons alchemy exists.
  • Be careful when gathering your ingredients. Their availability ranges across the entire world, and there are dangers lurking around every corner. Your best bet is to let your Professional Adventurer gather things for you.
  • Do not try to craft your own recipes.  All usable combinations have already been discovered and all unlisted combinations will only harm you, some may even cause permanent damage to your body.  Whatever combinations don’t hurt you will make a potion that has no effects therefore wasting ingredients.
  • Do not use the wrong bottle shape! You may have heard rumors about how using the wrong bottle shape may have disastrous–and often explosive–consequences. These rumors are baseless and obstructive to the pursuit of alchemical knowledge. Regardless, do not use the wrong bottle shape!
  • Be sure to throw away any used bottles, bowls, and mugs after each use. They are known to contaminate future concoctions if used again, thus rendering them ineffective or even harmful.

Suggested Equipment

Every alchemist, regardless of experience, requires a workstation in order to mix potions. It does not take long to make one and is in fact very simple; you merely need to place an empty bottle on a piece of furniture, like a table, workbench, dresser, or even a shelf. Only then will you be able to perform alchemical miracles! You always need a good workspace to be efficient and productive!!
You can also find an occasional lesser potion placed somewhere that you may also use as a station for your alchemical purposes. Once you pick it up, though, you will no longer be able to put it back down. This is due to the quantum-flux capacities that surround the bottle and keep it in place. We have been unable to figure out how to use existing potions in this manner, so we’re stuck using empty bottles.
However, the top recommendation for your station is to obtain an alchemy table. Unfortunately, the knowledge on how to craft these things is lost, but you can often find them in your friendly neighborhood dungeon. (Note: Do not wake up the Dungeon Guardian! He gets a bit grumpy at all hours of the day, and he’s exceedingly territorial.) Using an alchemy table may mysteriously duplicate your ingredients! This is caused by its collection of mana which it uses to create a mysterious duplication effect (all attempts to replicate this have failed).
(For the purposes of this book, we will be referring to the above alchemical workstations as alchemy stations.)
You will need a way to gather the ingredients. For wild herbs, just about anything will dig them out of the ground for you, from a dart trap to a bomb explosion. For herbs you plant in pots and boxes, you must use a pickaxe to dig them up. If you can manage to find one in a jungle shrine or crate, a staff of regrowth is the absolute most essential tool for optimal herb collection, especially in an artificial herb farm, as it will boost the amount of the herbs that you can safely use, as well as provide you with additional healthy seeds.
Clay pots and planter boxes are really useful if you want to set up an herb farm. If you are having trouble obtaining certain herbs, setting up a farm will be extremely beneficial.
You will also need bottles of all shapes and sizes. This unique classification method is useful for determining which potion is in which bottle and will allow them to be more organized according to OGAS (Order of the Guide Alchemical Standards). Remember to heed the aforementioned rule, and do not attempt to mix new potions!
Of course, alongside the bottles, you will need glass stoppers.
There are a few things you can create using a small item like a bowl, or a particular piece of furniture like a keg or cooking pot. These items will be mentioned accordingly. You may need to use A Terrarian Crafter’s Handbook™ in order to find how they are made, but you should have that book memorized by now.      Hmm…
Other than these basic tools, you will need ingredients! Most potions will require a bottle of water, as water is somehow both the base and the catalyst for many alchemical reactions. It is a very special life-sustaining liquid. So be sure to have many bottles and a source of water on hand at all times.

A Final Reminder!

Be sure not to disclose exploration and enemy information to your Professional Adventurer™. This includes warning them about any dangers (including the Dungeon Guardian), informing them about item locations (like where to find worm teeth), providing them hints on how to find and defeat guardians (like the Eye of Cthulhu), and telling them of future events that will inevitably occur due to their actions (like the release of the light and dark spirits).
They are assumed to know everything about their profession, and it is not your place to tell them how to do their job. You need only provide crafting information regarding items about which they inquire alongside a sample.
Please consult your Guide Guidebook™ if you have any questions or concerns about anything not addressed here.
Good luck with assisting your Professional Adventurer™ with all their alchemical needs!

Also, do not leave doors open.

A Quick Note on Alchemically Useless Plants

There are a few plants like cacti and pumpkins that are useful in alchemy, but you will find those in A Terrarian Crafter’s Handbook™ since they are primarily building materials.
Furthermore, there are many varieties of other plants, shrubs, and flowers out there, but most of them do not have any known alchemical properties. These include–but are not limited to–sunflowers, life fruit, nature’s gift, Plantera’s bulb (please don’t try and harvest this one), various mosses, and anything used for dyes like yellow marigold, orange bloodroot, and Strange Plants™. These plants may be safely ignored for all alchemical needs. For more information on these plants, check out A Terrarian’s Flora Handbook.

List of Fish

List of Restoration Potions

Lesser Healing Potion
Description: Triangular bottle. Blood red color. People have reported the flavor to be
“mushroom berry”, whatever that means. It also feels warm.
Effects: Heals minor injuries like cuts and bruises. Major injuries will merely become less
major.
Other Properties: Drink too much in one sitting, and you may burst into flames.
Other Locations: Both the Merchant and Skeleton Merchant carry these. It is also known
that the King Slime, the Eye of Cthulhu, the Brain of Cthulhu, the Eater of Worlds, and the
Queen Bee drop them for some reason.
Ingredients: A Glass Bottle, two Gel (Measure by handfuls, or else it will be very ineffective,
and taste like acid) and a Mushroom

Healing Potion
Description: Standard, round bottle. Blood red color. For whatever reason, they are said to
taste like fruit juice with a bubbling sensation, though some people have claimed to
experience it as a sort of snail slime. It is not currently known why.
Effects: Heals moderate injuries, like sitting on a spike or being outsmarted by a fifth grader.
Other Properties:  You may spontaneously explode if you drink too much in a single sitting.
Other Locations: The Wall of Flesh drops this, and they are occasionally found in pots while
exploring–particularly in the Underworld.
Ingredients: A Lesser Healing Potion and a Glowing Mushroom

Greater Healing Potion
Description: A larger round bottle. Blood red color. Our studies have shown that it tastes
like sparkling fairies.
Effects: Heals major injuries. This potion is for lava burns and broken bones.
Other Properties: You will burst into Pixie dust if you drink too much in one sitting.
Other Locations: Found in golden crates, and dropped by a variety of high-level bosses.
Ingredients: Some Bottled Water, a bit of Pixie Dust and one Crystal Shard (Please turn the
Shard into powder so I don’t choke on this potion).

 Super Healing Potion
Description: A huge round bottle. Blood red color. Made with the essence of the stars. This
ultimate healing potion is used only by the most legendary of the heroes. As far as we’re
concerned, you’ll feel so good that there is no notable flavor to it.
Effects: Heals almost any kind of injury. Can recover even lost limbs in seconds.
Other Properties: You will burst into stars if you drink too much in a single sitting.
(Warning, do not stand next to people about to burst!)
Other Locations: None.
Ingredients: A few Greater Healing Potions and one Solar, Nebula, Stardust, and Vortex
Fragment

Lesser Mana Potion
Description: An Ocean Blue, triangular bottle. The next best thing to mages besides getting
a rare gem for a new staff. It tastes like a grape juice, from our experience.
Effects: Replenishes your mana slightly.
Other Properties: Your magic power starts to fail you, due to sickness.
Other Locations: The Dungeon, and the Merchant selling it.
Ingredients: Unknown, due to the Clothier forgetting how they were made, and the
Merchant being stingy about the recipe.
Mana Potion
Description: Ocean Blue, round bottle. A Mage’s best friend, the standard mana potion, it
appears to fizzle slightly when opened for consumption. Used when Mana becomes scarce in
battle. It tastes like cranberry juice, so we’ve been told.
Effects: Replenishes your mana moderately.
Other Properties: Your magic power starts to fail you, due to sickness.
Other Locations: Iron Crates, for some reason.
Ingredients: One Lesser Mana Potion and one Glowing Mushroom

Greater Mana Potion
Description: An Ocean Blue, bigger bottle, which appears to fizzle when it is opened for
consumption. It tastes of a blueberry juice kind of drink… and the occasional white strand of
hair in it.
Effects: Replenishes you mana greatly.
Other Properties: Your magic power starts to fail you, due to sickness.
Other Locations: The Wizard and Biome Mimics (oddly enough).
Ingredients: None. We cannot make these potions without an extra kick of magic, so the
Wizards are responsible for providing this potion.

Super Mana Potion

Description: A Cylinder Bottle, Ocean Blue color, truly a remarkable potion. Upon opening
it for consumption, it has a smoke effect in the shape of a star, and fizzles greatly as well. It
tastes like sparkling water.
Effects: Replenishes almost all of your mana
Other Properties: Your magic power starts to fail you, due to sickness.
Other Locations: None other than crafting it.
Ingredients: A lot of Greater Mana Potions, one Fallen Star, a few Crystal Shards and one
Unicorn Horn (please use a mortar for this, we don’t need to get tongues pricked by another
horn).

Lesser Restoration Potion

Description: A pig pink potion in a triangular bottle, much like the lesser Mana and Healing
potions, very helpful for a Mage taking on a serious opponent.  A rather pleasant
taste, akin to fruit punch.
Effects: Will heal the consumer’s wounds and replenish their mana, but only a small amount
of both.
Other Properties: You’re going to feel very sick after it, drinking anymore would make you
spontaneously combust after vomiting.
Other Locations: These potions have become a myth, frankly not even sure if anyone can
trust this documentation of it. Some sources say that these potions can still be found
in the underworld, though no confirmation has been made yet.
Ingredients: This weaker form of the Restoration Potion has had it’s recipe lost to the world.

Restoration Potion

Description: A pig pink potion in a round bottle, much like the Mana and Healing Potions,
extremely helpful for a Mage that’s in a tight spot. Much less pleasant than the Lesser
Restoration potion, due to having ash mixed into it.
Effects: Will moderately heal the consumer’s wounds and replenish their mana moderately as
well.
Other Properties: After drinking this, you will likely be on the verge of exploding, and
morbidly sick, so do take that into caution.
Other Locations: Found in Shadow Chests scattered throughout The Underworld.
Ingredients: A Mushroom, Pink Gel and Bottle

Strange Brew

Description: A sickly purple colored liquid in a round bottle with a thin tube. A mysterious
liquid that tastes something like worms mixed in fish, disgusting.
Effects: Replenishes all of your Mana and moderately heals your wounds
Other Properties: Will definitely induce vomiting, no doubt about it.
Other Locations: A Skeleton Merchant, or at least that’s what I’ve been told, sells it. Highly
doubt it’s a friendly merchant.

Afterword

Alchemy, like fishing, may not be for everyone, regardless of how useful it is. Your Professional Adventurer™ may not ask you about potions or ingredients, but this information should nevertheless be memorized just in case your alchemical knowledge is ever required.
As a final reminder, do not push any suggestions onto your Professional Adventurer™. You are their source of knowledge in the common cases when they do not know something. Leave them to decide their own fates, even if it is at the expense of your own. These measures may seem drastic, but your Professional Adventurer™ is the only hope you will ever have in making the world a better place. They have the potential that other Terrarians do not. They can reach greater heights of strength, speed, endurance, wisdom, magic ability, and–in much rarer cases–intelligence. It is best for you to leave them to their work and to assist only when they ask.
Good luck to you all, and may your Professional Adventurers™ find their glory!
