Character Creation Considerations

Will pursue Grapple/Shove specialization

No Giant’s Might yet but planning around it

Basic tactic will be to Shove them Prone and Grapple so they can’t get up

Will do plenty of personal Shoving

However, Grappling is maximized by party cooperation as needs to be paired with something good

Grapple fantastic synergy with Prone from ally as well

e.g. Ally Shove, Trip, Sapping Sting, Thunderwave

Grapple has good synergy with Persistent AOE

e.g. Heavy Obscurement, Spike Growth, Silence, Anti-Magic Field, et al.

Shove also has good synergy with Conquest Paladin Fear aura which prevents movement

No need to Grapple while Feared as Move 0’

However, bad synergy with Obscurement and Ranged Attack allies

Ranged attacks are at disadvantage vs. Prone

Work with party to maximize Grapple benefits

Race will be Simic Hybrid

Darkvision 60’ so not fully reliant on Storm Rune

Gains Climb speed or Glide at 3rd level

Gains Grappling Appendages at 5th level (2 extra arms but tentacles/claws)

Bonus Action Grapple when making unarmed strike with natural weapon for d6+Str

Can use with regular Attack Action to Grapple w/o damage if preferred

Only applies to tentacle and not weapons

Bonus Action Grapple follows “immediately after hitting”

Implies Bonus Action Grapple can’t be used following Shove attack

But ask your DM

Would be helpful if single attack can be Shove + Bonus Action Grapple

Can Grapple up to 4x creatures, or 2x with both hands free

Halberd will be main weapon

Ask DM about using shield with tentacle at 5th level while still keeping both hands free

Tentacles cannot use “specialized equipment”

RAI it seems shields aren’t allowed but RAW is ambiguous… you never know, so ask

However, PAM suboptimal due to serious Bonus Action clog at middle+ levels

Fighting unarmed possible at level 5 due to natural weapons

However, suboptimal for main attack as tentacles have unimpressive d6+Str damage

Can’t get magical item bumps

Can’t benefit from strong Fighting Styles or Feats like GWM

Unarmed Fighting Style underpowered given Simic Hybrid’s natural weapons

Lacks Reach which fails to maximize effect of Giant’s Might size bump

Sword & Board or Two-Weapon Fighting would significantly reduce DPR as GWM not available

DPR already suboptimal 

Will be devoting many Attack Actions to Shove for zero damage

Will be devoting many Attack Actions to tentacle at only d6+Str damage

Necessary to proc Bonus Action Grapple attack

Giant’s Might damage bump mitigates a bit, but still want to pursue GWM

Lacks Reach which fails to maximize effect of Giant’s Might size bump

TWF will have hard time finding bonus actions to devote to off-hand attack

Rune Knight suffers from severe Bonus Action clog

Willing to sacrifice (magical) shield AC bump to improve DPR to par

Will take Defense Fighting Style or Blind Fighting to make up for reduced AC

Optionally, Sword & Board offers higher defenses and Dueling FS can bump damage

No GWM plus Shove/Grapple damage reductions would mean inferior DPR

May be acceptable if RK evolves as party “helper”

Big picture, Sword & Board also makes available a larger range of magical weapons

Powerful weapon (e.g. Flame Tongue) can make up for DPR loss of GWM

Combined with Giant’s Might damage bump may be acceptable DPR

Archery specialization would marginalize Shove/Grapple specialization

Archers more suited for Battlemaster, Samurai, or Arcane Archer
