FADE IN:

INT. REECE’S HOUSE- NIGHT

REECE, a loner high school senior, is at a desk inside his room.  On the desk are crumpled-up tissues, an OLD REVOLVER, and a box of bullets. The box is nearly empty, a singular bullet remaining.  Reece grabs at one of the crumpled up tissues, but realizes when he puts his nose to it, it’s not snot.

REECE

Fuck.

Reece puts the tissue back on the and sniffs the snot back into his nose.  He grabs the gun and shakily loads the single bullet into the revolver.  He obviously has never handled a gun before, so he has trouble trying to put the bullet in.  The bullet falls back onto the table and Reece picks it up.  He thoroughly examines it, thinking if he should really go through with it or not.  He sneezes again, and the bullet drops out of his hand and next to the gun.  He gulps and loads the bullet slowly, taking his time to make sure it doesn’t fall out again.

Reece puts the revolver holes back into place, and cocks the gun.  He looks down into the cannon of it, closely looking at the bullet staring back up at him.  Reece puts the gun up next to his head and holds it there for a bit.  He sheds a single tear and sniffs.  He slowly pulls the trigger, and when he finally does, he anticipates the bullet.  Nothing happens though, the gun is jammed.  Reece waits for a second, and realizes the gun isn’t working.  He looks at the gun and wacks it with his hand, trying to get it to work.  He cocks it again and puts it next to his head.  He pulls the trigger again, this time more eager.  It doesn’t work.  Reece reacts quickly this time, and whacks the gun on the table a bunch.

He sniffs his snot up again and cocks the gun.  He takes a deep sigh and puts it next to his head again.  He twitches a bit and is now ready to end himself.

CLOSE UP

The camera focuses on his finger on the trigger, which is squeezing it.  It is very close to firing now.  Reece ten counts down to shoot himself.

REECE

Reece closes his eyes.

REECE(CONT’D)

2.

The camera goes back to the trigger and he is now about to shoot it.  It goes back to Reece and his nose is twitching, ready to sneeze.

REECE

1.

Reece then sneezes badly, but at the same time fires the gun.  The bullet skims the top of his head badly, causing blood to splatter everywhere.  Reece falls out of his chair and onto the floor of his room.  The camera goes back onto the table, showing a note just saying “Sorry”.

TITLE: PART ONE

INT. PSYCHIATRIST'S OFFICE- DAY

Reece is sitting with JOHN and BRENDA, who are his well-looking parents.  Across from them, sitting at a large desk is the head physiatrist DR. MULLER, who looks like he means well.

The part of Reece’s head where he shot himself is bleached.  There is also a bit of a scar there, but the hair mostly covers it.  There is an awkward silence between them as they stare at each other.  Brenda tries to grab Reece’s hand, which she does, but she can only hold on for a second.  Reece pulls his hand away from her.  Dr. Muller is smiling at the three of them.

DR. MULLER

(sympathetically)

What a beautiful family.

Really, look at the three of you.

Brenda and John both smile.  Reece doesn’t and spaces out.

DR. MULLER
Well…this is never easy to talk about.

Always the worst of my job.  But I am

getting paid for this!

Brenda and John give a forced chuckle to Dr. Muller.

DR. MULLER

(awkwardly)

So, your son tried to…eh…kill

himself.  There.  I said it.  High

five to me!

Dr. Muller chuckles at his own joke, but this time Brenda and John don’t amuse him.  Dr. Muller notices this and realizes that the jokes he’s making are inappropriate.

DR. MULLER

(seriously)

Well, it’s been two months now and

school is starting up soon.  Your

son is now on anti-depressants and he

hasn’t tried to kill himself again.  He’s

in therapy, he talks again, and he’s in

good physical condition.  I think it’d be bbeneficial for him to go back to school.

JOHN

Do you really think he’s ready for that?

(turns to Reece)

Are you ready for that, pal?

John looks at Reece for an answer.  Reece shrugs and keeps silent.

DR. MULLER

Maybe he doesn’t talk too much, but people like him need social interaction.  Good or bad, talking to someone, anyone might help.  Does he have any friends?  Or is he more of a loner?

BRENDA

Well, he had some friends when he was in elementary school.  Ever since he’s been

a bit more of a loner.

Reece doesn’t answer.  Brenda stares at her son, thinking about the boy she once had.

DR. MULLER
Why don’t you get back to what

you were saying, Brenda?

BRENDA

 Uh…yeah.  Well, after middle school

I haven’t really seen him hang out with

anybody except for Sam every now and then.

JOHN

(jerkishly)

He’s always doing something on

that tablet of his.

BRENDA

(loudly)

Don’t say that!

JOHN

Well it’s true!  If…

Brenda and John argue in the background as Reece looks at a PAINTING behind Dr. Muller.  Dr. Muller is trying to intervene between the two of them.  The painting has red, uniform lines on it with one blue across it.  The painting starts to form into something else.  The blue line shatters as the red lines turn into splots.  They float around in the painting, bouncing off of the frame.  Reece looks stupefied.  You can hear someone calling Reece’s name in the background.  It gets louder as it slowly fades out of the painting.  John grabs Reece by the shoulder and shakes him.  Reece snaps out of it and looks at his dad.

REECE

(a bit out of it)

Yeah?

DR. MULLER

See?  He’s talking now.

JOHN

(looks at Dr. Muller aggressively)

I can tell, thanks.

(turns back to Reece)

Son, do you want to go back to school?  Answer me with words this time, please.

BRENDA

Don’t speak to him like that!

JOHN

Let the boy talk.

Everyone stares at Reece, awaiting an answer.

REECE

(without emotion)

I’m fine with going back.

DR. MULLER

(excitedly)

Great!  What a way to start your Senior year!

BRENDA

Are you sure honey?  You don’t have to go

back if you don’t want to.  You can spend all your time with me in homeschool!

Reece immediately shuts down that option.

REECE

No, I'll go back to school.

John pats Reece on the back.

JOHN

That’s my boy.

Brenda is disappointed by Reece’s answer.

DR. MULLER

So, Reece will still have his

weekly therapy sessions, stick to his

medicine, and of course, go to school.

This is only a small roadblock in his life.

Detours happen and sometimes they can be better.

BRENDA

(heartfelt)

That’s beautiful, Doctor.

DR. MULLER
Thanks, I got that off Pinterest.

REECE

(quietly)

Of course…

DR. MULLER

What was that?

REECE

Nothing.

DR. MULLER

Well, I got something for you.  For school.

Dr. Muller goes through one of his drawers, looking for the item.  Reece and his family look on in interest.  Dr. Muller pulls out a black hat with a smiley face on front.  It says under it, “All Smiles.”  Dr. Muller throws the hat at Reece, and he catches it.

DR. MULLER

You can wear this to cover your scar.

Reece puts on the hat and it mostly covers the scar and bleached hair.

DR. MULLER

What do you think?

REECE

(unsure)

Do I have to wear this?

BRENDA

I’m sure you don’t have to wear it if-

DR. MULLER

(cuts off Brenda)

He should wear it.  Kids can be so mean these days.  I mean, my own daughter won’t even speak to me anymore.  And she’s only 13!

Dr. Muller laughs a bit, but stops and softly weeps.  He puts his head into his arms and onto the table.  Reece and his family look at him weirdly.

JOHN

(politely)

I think we’ll be going now.  Thanks for

all of your well-thought-out advice.

They all get up and walk out, leaving Dr. Muller crying on his desk.

EXT. SOCCER PITCH- LATE AFTERNOON

Reece is playing soccer on an enclosed pitch.  He has his hat on and is shooting the ball.  He has airpods in and is listening to music.  You can hear the music he is listening to.  He shoots a couple of balls, and most of them miss or slowly rolls into the net.  Reece is obviously frustrated and punts a ball into the top corner.  The camera follows the ball into the top corner, and it goes in and then bounces out.

EXT. SOCCER PITCH- LATE AFTERNOON- FLASHBACK

It rolls back to Reece, but it’s now a month or two before he shot himself, and his hair is normal and he doesn’t have his hat.  The music cuts out as you notice that he doesn’t have his airpods in.  Reece is smiling and kicks up the ball into his hands.  He throws it up into the air and volleys it into the top corner.  He laughs at his goodwill and pulls out his phone as he gets a text.  He looks down and it’s a text from SAMUEL.

It says “Did you do the assignment yet?”

Reece replies, “Which one?”

Samuel texts back, “Mrs. Choityer’s.  The stupid five pager?”

Reece hasn’t done that one yet and sighs because of the extra work ahead of him tonight.

Reece texts, “Nope.  Long night ahead of the both of us then.

Samuel texts back a sad emoji.

Reece turns off his phone and throws it across the field.  It goes far and hits the fence around it.  Reece picks up one of his balls and punts it up into the air.  He walks out of frame.

INT. REECE’S HOME- NIGHT

REECE’S BEDROOM

Reece, today, is sitting in his chair with his partially bleached hair with his hat off.  It is laying on the table next to him.  He goes through his drawers and looks at the crumpled up note that said “Sorry”.  It has some blood on it. He examines it and puts it away.  He grabs his pills and takes a couple.   He grabs his phone, which has a decent amount of cracks on it and texts Samuel.

He texts, “Wanna do something?”

He places his phone on the table and waits.  He fidgets a bit and goes onto youtube and watches soccer highlights.  He doesn’t watch them out of passion anymore, but out of boredom.  He then gets a text back from Samuel.

He texts back, “Busy.  Next time.”

Reece looks down and sighs.  He gets up, turns off the light, and hops in bed in his clothes.

LATER

Reece wakes up in the morning and yawns.

CUT TO:

REECE’S BATHROOM

Reece is standing over the toilet with the door open, peeing.  It's a long and loud visit.

CUT TO:

KITCHEN

Reece is sitting down in the kitchen, eating some oatmeal.  It looks DAMP AND GROSS.  He is reading The Elephant Vanishes.  John walks downstairs and sees his son.

JOHN

(routinely)

Hey kid.  What ya eating?

REECE

Oatmeal.

John looks at it.

JOHN

(sarcastically)

Looks delicious.  I’m off to work.

John walks out of the door with his suitcase.  Reece doesn’t look up from his book.  He takes a bite of his oatmeal and closes his book.

HIGH ANGLE

Reece pours the oatmeal into the sink and turns on the water.  We see it slowly go down the drain.

EXT. BAR HARBOR SHOPPING AREA- DAY

THE SHOPS

Reece is going for a run with the hat on his head.  He’s not going too fast and is listening to music.  You can hear the music he’s listening to.  He runs by all of the shops and stops at a vampire and ghost shop.  He looks inside and sees there’s a ton of people in it.  He runs on.

PARK AREA

He gets to the area by the water and sits down on the grass.  He stops the music on the phone and looks out at the bay.  He takes it all in and lets out a loud sigh.  He pulls out his phone and looks through some documents.  It focuses just on the phone.

EXT. BAR HARBOR SHOPPING AREA- DAY- FLASHBACK

It zooms out onto Reece a while ago, with his normal hair.  He is sitting next to Samuel.  They are looking out at the ocean together.

REECE

(earnestly)

It’s nice to just, y’know, spend

some time together every once in a

while.

SAMUEL

(not paying attention)

Yeah.

Samuel is on his phone, looking at something, barely paying attention to Reece.  Reece notices this and tests it out.

REECE
Did you hear I’m going to Yale?

I got like…super early acceptance.

SAMUEL

(still not paying attention)

Nice.

Reece tries to see what Samuel’s looking at.  Samuel guards it well.

REECE
I’m joining the priesthood.

SAMUEL

(aware)

I’m not that gullible, thank you very much.

Reece laughs a bit at this, and Samuel does as well, but not as much.  The fun peters out.  Reece stares out at the ocean and sees a singular fishing boat out on the water.

EXT. BAR HARBOR SHOPPING AREA- DAY

PARK AREA

Reece takes off his hat and puts it in his lap.  He sees MATT, PIERRE, and SERGIO walking around together.  They look like they’re having a great time.  Reece smiles at the thought of friends and he starts to tear up a bit.  He wipes his teary eyes off his face and puts his hat on.  He gets up and starts to run back.

INT. REECE’S HOME- NIGHT

KITCHEN

Reece is sitting at his kitchen table with the tablets next to him.  There are three out.  He looks to his side and sees a picture of him and his family when he was little.  He grabs it and looks at it closer.  He then looks back at his anti-depressant pills.  He smiles for a second at the picture but it soon fades away as he drops it and takes all three of them.  He swallows them without water and gets up.

REECE’S ROOM

Reece is sitting on his bed, looking at school pre-work.  There is a summer math warm up sheet and he has his laptop out, looking for answers.  He is a bit stressed out about it and runs his hands through his hair constantly.

BRENDA

DINNER!

Reece gladly closes his laptop and goes downstairs.

KITCHEN

Reece is sitting down eating dinner with his parents.  They are having a potato with green beans.  Reece has barbeque sauce out and pours some on his plate.  He dips his potato in and takes a bite.  Everyone is quiet until Brenda speaks up.

BRENDA
Do you have everything for your

first day at school tomorrow?

REECE

Yep.

Reece goes in for another bite of the barbeque potato.

JOHN

(wanting more of an answer)

Are you excited?

REECE

Kind of.

JOHN

That’s better than no.

John chuckles a bit and goes back for his food.  He takes a bite of the green beans and spits them out.

BRENDA
What’s wrong with the green beans?

John wipes his mouth.

JOHN

They’re cold.  Did you even heat them up?

BRENDA

(hesitates)

I think so…maybe I forgot?

JOHN

Jesus Christ, do you remember anything?

BRENDA
I’m sorry that I also have to take care of a kid!

JOHN

Well good job with that!  Look at the

freak, he barely says a fucking thing!

BRENDA

(protectively)

Don’t say that about him!

Reece puts in his headphones and you can hear the music.  He focuses on his food and dips his potato in the sauce.  His parents are arguing in the background.  Reece moves his food around on the plate and mixes it all together.  He looks up and sees his parents yelling at each other.  Reece picks up his plate and walks over to the sink with his music still going.  He washes out the plate and puts it in the dishwasher.  He looks back at his parents who are still arguing with each other.  They haven’t noticed that Reece has left the table.  He walks by them and they don’t blink an eye.  He goes up to his room.

REECE’S ROOM

Reece is sitting on his bed on his laptop.  He is looking at his school schedule.  He sees that he has a lot of teachers and doesn’t know them.  He pulls out his phone and texts Samuel.

He texts, “Who do you have for school”

Reece puts down his phone and waits.  He then gets a text from Samuel.  He opens up his phone and sees that Samuel sent a picture of his schedule.  Reece compares the schedules and finds that they have no classes together.

Reece texts, “We got no classes together”

Samuel Texts back, “That sucks. Guess we have lunch then. See you tomorrow hopefully.”

Reece closes his phone and looks at the schedule.  He then closes his laptop and pulls out a notebook.  Inside are a ton of writings.  He grabs his pencil and starts writing something.  You can see that it is a short story.  There is a time-lapse of him writing, and when he finishes, he puts it back on his desk and lays down in bed.  He closes his eyes and around him it’s dark, but a few seconds later he opens them and it’s day.

LATER

He gets out of bed and goes to his closet to get changed.  He finds a shirt and shorts and goes into the bathroom to get changed.  He closes the door behind him.  He opens the door a couple of seconds later and he is fully dressed.  He walks out and grabs a filled-up backpack and his laptop.

SECOND FLOOR HALLWAY

He walks downstairs as the camera follows him.

KITCHEN

He gets down into the kitchen and a breakfast sandwich is waiting for him.  There is a note next to it.

It says, “Gone to the store. Have a great first day!”

Reece grabs the sandwich and takes a bite of it on his way out.  He then turns around though, almost forgetting his hat.  He goes to grab it, but hesitates, thinking if he should really wear something that tacky.  He grabs it and puts it on, deciding to wear it.

INT. REECE’S CAR- MORNING

Reece is driving to school in an oldish car.  He is just finishing eating his sandwich.  He is listening to no music.  He drives by the Minigolf place, and as he does that, the camera switches to the other side of the car and it’s night time.

INT. REECE’S CAR- NIGHT- FLASHBACK

Reece has his normal hair.  He pulls up to the putt putt place and parks.

EXT. PUTT PUTT PLACE- NIGHT- FLASHBACK

FRONT OF PUTT PUTT PLACE

Reece gets out of the car and grabs his phone.  He walks up to the stand and there is a line there.  He opens his phone and texts Samuel.

He texts, “Here. What about u?”

Reece waits for a moment with his phone open, but doesn’t get a response in the first couple of seconds.  He puts his phone away and it’s his turn to get a ball and putter.  He pulls out his wallet.  WENDY is waiting at the cashier for him.  There is a poster for a missing boy, EVAN, stapled to the front of the cashier area.

WENDY

One person?

REECE
I have a friend coming soon, but

I’m just paying for myself.

WENDY

(flat)

So one person?

REECE

I guess so.

Instead of getting Reece a putter, Wendy tries to comfort him, even though he didn’t ask for it.

WENDY

Listen, kid, I’ve played putt putt by myself a thousand times.  It’s nothing to be ashamed of.

REECE

I am playing with a friend, so I feel

(pauses)

fine.

WENDY

(helpfully)

Consider this game on the house.

Wendy hands him a putter and a ball.  Reece gives up arguing with her and takes the handout spitefully.  Reece sits down at a bench next to the putt putt course and checks his text.  Samuel still hasn’t replied yet.  He looks at it worryingly and puts his phone away.  We see some quick shots showing the passing of time.  It’s about a half hour later.

Reece checks his phone again and it says read, but no response.  Reece looks at his contacts for someone else to text and play with, but finds the only contacts he has are his mom and dad.

REECE

Huh.

He looks up and sees Wendy looking at him, urging him to go play.

REECE

(defensively)

He’s just running a little late!

WENDY

Go play or Imma have to kick you out.

REECE
Fine.  Guess he’ll have to find me on the green!

WENDY

I wish him good luck then.

THE GREEN

Reece walks onto the green and to the first hole, which is empty.  He drops down his ball and aims the shot.  He shoots it and just misses the hole.

BEGIN MONTAGE:

Reece is on the same hole, and shoots his shot, which is a very easy one to sink.  He misses just barely.

Reece is on a different hole now, which is more complex.  He putts, and misses the entrance going to the other part of the hole.  The ball is now in an awkward position.

Reece has already completed the first couple of putts on a another hole, and his ball is in prime position to score.  Reece swings his putter and scuffs the floor.  The ball moves a couple of centimeters and stops in front of the hole.  Reece has a blank expression on his face, trying to hide anger.

Reece is on the final hole now, and after a second of concentration, he sinks a hole in one.  He smiles, but without anyone to congratulate him or share the moment with, he soon reverts back to his normal state.  He goes and picks up the ball, and when he does, he notices Matt and his group of friends on the hole behind him.  He looks back at them and sees his desire for someone or a group of people to call his own.  They are playing around on the green, hitting each other’s balls and laughing.  Reece snaps out of it and walks over to his car.  He gets in.

END MONTAGE:

INT. REECE’S CAR- NIGHT- MONTHS EARLIER(FLASHBACK)

He starts up his car and drives off.  He drives up to the school and looks at it.  He looks down at his feet for a second and looks up.

INT. REECE’S CAR- MORNING

It’s gone back to normal now, with Reece wearing his hat and he has all of his school stuff with him.  He grabs his stuff and steps outside of the car.

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL- DAY

ENTRANCE TO THE SCHOOL

Reece walks to the front of the school.  Crowds of kids are coming in, but it looks like they are all walking far from him.  He gets to the front and stops for a second and ponders if this was the right decision.  Someone bumps into him as he stands right in front of the door.  Reece goes in.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL – DAY

FIRST FLOOR HALLWAYS

Reece steps into the school and looks around.  People are walking around in groups, standing around lockers, and running throughout the halls.  Reece walks down the hall and pulls out a paper with his locker information.  He walks down the hallway crowded with people, bumping into them and almost falling over.  He gets to his locker which is right below one, so he has to bend over to open it.  SOMEONE, another highschooler, is opening their locker right above him, and their papers fall on top of Reece’s head.  Reece looks up and Someone doesn’t notice their papers have gone missing.  It takes Reece a good couple of sentences to speak up.

REECE

(nervously)

Y-you dropped your papers.

Reece tries to hand Someone above him, but Someone ignores him and walks off after closing their locker.  Reece doesn’t know what to do with the paper at first, but then drops the papers on the ground and stuffs his unnecessary items in his locker.  He closes it and turns around, but TEACHER #1 is waiting there in front of him.

TEACHER #1

(sternly)

Are these your papers?

REECE

(hesitates)

Uh…no.

TEACHER #1

Then why are you putting them

in the middle of the hallway?

REECE

(elongates the word “because”)

Because they’re not mine?

TEACHER #1

You better do something with these or I’ll

send you straight to the principal’s office.  Got that?

REECE
Y-yes ma’am.

Reece says this very nervously.

TEACHER #1

(with a bee in her bonnet)

There’s also no hats in school.  Give me that.

She grabs the hat off of his head to his surprise.  She looks and sees Reece’s head wound and bleached part of his head.  She lets out a small gasp.  Reece is a bit embarrassed by it.

TEACHER #1

(grossed out)

How did you get that?

REECE

I was at the shooting range and a gun

misfired.  Can I have my hat back?

Teacher #1 shakily gives him his hat back.  Reece puts it on his head and takes the papers with him as he leaves.  The teacher looks on feeling bad for her actions.

MATH CLASSROOM

Reece walks into the class and dumps the papers into the trash can.  He looks to the back and finds an empty seat waiting for him.  He plops down in it and waits for class to begin.  Other kids are around him, and CHAD is eating some pop tarts out of the wrapper.  He stares off into space as he stuffs his face with them.  Reece watches on curiously as Chad scoffs the whole thing down very quickly.  He grabs the other one and eats it horrendously quickly.  The bell then rings and Chad stuffs the wrapper into his pocket.  MR. LUKEWELL, the math teacher, walks into the class and closes the door behind him.  He is a serious and stern looking man, dressed in the most teacher looking outfit.  He locks it with a key he pulls from his pocket.  He turns to face the class, holding up the key, showing it off to them.

MR. LUKEWELL

(lecturing)

Welcome to your first day of real life, students.  This will be the hardest and most brutal course you will ever take.  I know you all are C-students, but I will form you into intellectuals in the highest form.  Math isn’t just about numbers, it’s about how you deal with life’s evil and mysterious forces.  Anything could happen with equations, and your existence as well.  There are no handouts here, only pain and experience.  I-

SAM, an overweight student, starts to bang on the locked door of the Math classroom.  You can see her through the window.

SAM
Can you let me in?

Mr. Lukewell chuckles.

MR. LUKEWELL

See this?  This is how life can treat you.  It can prevent you from doing things that are needed, and it won’t care how bad you want it.  You could-

SAM

(persistently)

Sir?  Did you hear me?  Let me in!

Sam bangs on the door a bit more.

MR.LUKEWELL

(to Sam)

You’re late, therefore, you don’t get to participate in today’s class!  Go bug off and eat some more candy you fat whore!

The whole class freezes as Mr. Lukewell calls Sam a fat whore.  Sam is shocked and walks out of the view of the door.  Mr. Lukewell realizes he made a big mistake.

MR. LUKEWELL

(trying to be serious)

That is a great example of life hitting

you in the ass.  Have a good year students.

Mr. Lukewell collects his things hastily, unlocks the door, and walks out.  The class watches with disbelief.  The class looks around and doesn’t know what to do.  LUCA speaks up.

LUCA

I guess we’ll be having a substitute for a while.

The class laughs at this joke as Reece still looks at the door where Mr. Lukewell left.  The speech meant something to him, and he wants to know more.  Reece gets up and runs out of the room to catch up with Mr. Lukewell.

FIRST FLOOR HALLWAYS

Reece sees Mr.Lukewell slowly walking down the hallway and catches up to him.  He notices Reece walking next to him.

MR. LUKEWELL
Can you believe it?  The fatty ran

faster than me.

REECE

(curiously)

Did you mean what you said

back there?  About life.

MR. LUKEWELL

Of course.  A man isn’t a proper man without his principles.  I wouldn’t lie to you kids like that, even if you are a bit slow.

Brennan ignores his insults.

REECE

So life can just come out of

nowhere and kick you in the ass?

MR. LUKEWELL

(corrects Reece)

Hit you in the ass, and yes, it can.

They walk silently together as they near the exit.

REECE

Where are you going?

MR. LUKEWELL

To my car.  You saw what happened

there, I have no job.  I’m quitting.

REECE

(confused)

You’re not gonna stay and

get the severance package?

MR. LUKEWELL

Like I just said-A man isn’t a proper

man without his principles.

Mr. Lukewell walks on as Reece stays back.  Reece looks on as Mr. Lukewell walks out into the parking lot.

LATER

SCHOOL CAFETERIA

Reece is sitting down at a table with a small number of people at it.  Reece has a lunchbox with him, one you would have in elementary school.  Reece sighs at it.  He opens it up and there is a moldy looking sandwich, a bag of chips, and a juicebox.  There is a note in it.  Reece picks it up and reads it.

It says, “Have a great first day back!  Don’t think about what you did as a step back-think of it as a step forward! -Mom”

Reece cringes at the well-meant note and puts it back into his lunchbox.  He pulls out the gray sandwich and takes a bite.  Reece doesn’t exactly like it, but is too hungry to say no.  He looks up and sees Samuel walking over to the table.  Reece smiles at the recognition of Samuel and he sits down across from him.

SAMUEL

Hey buddy!  Long time no see!

REECE

(lights up)

Yeah!

After their opening remarks, they don’t really know what to start off with.  They haven’t really talked consistently to each other in months, so it’s a bit awkward for the both of them.

SAMUEL

So

(hesitates)

how’s the first day of Senior year going?

REECE
Y’know, normal as usual.  My math teacher

walked out of class in the first minute and

never came back.

SAMUEL

For real?  Why?

REECE

He called some girl a

(whispers, not wanting to get caught)

fat whore.

SAMUEL

Jesus, what a teacher!

Reece knows what Samuel said was a joke, but thinks about what Samuel said.

REECE

Yeah…

Samuel laughs again and takes a drink of his protein shake. Reece notices he has no food.

REECE

Where’s your food?

SAMUEL

I’m on a diet.  There’s team tryouts for this

new club in town in a month so I need to get ready for it.  This is a protein shake.

Samuel holds up his drink when he says that and shakes it.

REECE

I didn’t know a new club came to fruition.

SAMUEL

Yeah, it just really announced itself.

Do you think you’re gonna try out?

(takes sip)

REECE

I actually got this head injury a month or so back.  I’m afraid I’m out of sports for a bit.

Reece points to his head.

SAMUEL

So that’s why you’re wearing that corny ass

hat!  “All smiles.”  Where the fuck do they

come up with that?

REECE

Probably China.

They laugh at that together.

SAMUEL

So how’d you hurt your head?

REECE

(quickly, trying to hide the lie)

Boating accident.  I was out at the lake and I fell off my wakeboard and hit my head on it.

SAMUEL

(interested)

Ow.  Can I see it?

Samuel reaches over to look, but Reece stops him.

REECE

It’s nothing much to look at.

Samuel backs off and sits back down.

SAMUEL

If you say so.

Reece eats a couple of chips and Samuel downs some protein shake.

REECE

Are we still doing our weekly movie watch?

Since we stopped over the summer?

SAMUEL

I don’t know for every week, but I

already picked one out for this one.

Samuel pulls out his phone and searches it up to show him.  He flips it around so Reece can see.  It is the poster of the film.  The poster is a creepy looking man in heaven with kids in the background.  On the top, it says, Only The Good Die Young.

REECE

What’s it about?

SAMUEL

A child predator accidentally gets sent to Heaven instead of hell after he dies while having a heart attack in the middle of jerking off.  So-

Reece doesn’t want to hear any more from the repulsive plot.

REECE

(hastily)

No need to be so descriptive!

SAMUEL

I’m just saying what I saw on

the synopsis from Wikipedia!

REECE

(agreeing)

Fine, go on.

SAMUEL

So he goes to heaven, right, and no one

notices that he should be in hell.  The

rest of the movie is him trying not to

get caught while creeping on some angel

kiddos.

REECE

(not really looking for a direct answer)

Who in their right mind would

make such a film like that?

SAMUEL

Richard Blanche.  He’s some rich dude who started his own production company just to make this movie.  I think he tried to make it some sort of dark comedy, but it comes off like he’s supporting it.  He left for Bermuda a while back and hasn’t been seen since.

REECE

A missing director and an awful concept?

Sign me up.  Do you have to rent it?

SAMUEL

Nah, it’s free on youtube.

REECE

(playfully)

I’ll make sure to take extensive

notes throughout the film.

SAMUEL

Haha, yeah.  Look, man, there’s this party tonight for seniors at Cathy’s place.

You wanna come?

Reece has never been to a party before and it shows from his facial expression when he is asked to go to one.

REECE

(hesitates)

I don’t know about that…

SAMUEL

It’ll be awesome man!  Just a little bit of fun before college season kicks off and we’re nose deep into paperwork.

REECE

I’m kinda busy tonigh-

SAMUEL

I’ll send you the address and what time you should be there after school.  I gotta go now.  See you at the party.

Samuel gets up and walks off into the crowd, not taking no for an answer.  Reece looks off and sees Samuel sitting with a different group of people.

INT. THERAPY SESSION ROOM- LATE AFTERNOON

Reece is in a completely white room, sitting in a comfy looking white chair.  Across from him is MRS. BRUNSIK, a middle aged woman, who looks very kind.  She has a notepad out and is ready to write.  She stares at Reece with kind eyes, preparing to start.  Reece rubs his nose.

MRS. BRUNSWICK

So you had your first day of school…how was it?

REECE

(not wanting to elaborate)

Fine.

There is a short pause between them.

MRS. BRUNSIK

You know you need to elaborate more.

REECE

(smart-ass)

I had Math, then Biology, ate lunch, had

English, then topped it off with French.

MRS. BRUNSIK

And how did all of those classes go?

REECE

Great.

Mrs. Brunswick can tell that Reece is hiding something.

MRS. BRUNSIK

We’ve been having sessions for over a month now.  We started off so well together.  I don’t want you to regress.

REECE

(reluctantly)

There’s a party tonight I was invited to.

MRS. BRUNSIK

A party?  Whose?

REECE

That doesn’t really matter, but Samuel

invited me and I don’t know if I should go.

MRS. BRUNSIK

Your best friend, correct?

REECE

Yeah, I guess.

The camera focuses on Mrs. Brunsik.

MRS. BRUNSIK

And how is your relationship with him?

The camera pans back to Reece, who doesn’t have his hat anymore, which he was wearing before.

INT. THERAPY SESSION ROOM- LATE AFTERNOON- FLASHBACK

It was about a month ago.  He is also wearing different clothes.

REECE

I don’t know.  I text him…occasionally.

MRS. BRUNSIK(O.S.)

Do you have any other friends

you like to talk to?

REECE

My mom and dad are the only other contacts in my phone, but I don’t really text them.

MRS. BRUNSIK(O.S.)

Do you have any other friends?

Reece thinks about it for a second.

REECE

(bluntly)

No.

MRS. BRUNSIK(O.S.)

So what do you do with your free time?

REECE

I write a bit, like short stories.  Watch youtube.  But, mostly, I just wait.  Wait for someone to text me, or call me, or anything.  I still hold onto my phone at all times, though.  Just to make sure I don’t miss anything

(pauses)

But I never do.  No one ever reaches out, but I still hold on wait.  Maybe it’s because I have fuck all to do.  I look around at my parents, my one and only friend, and see shadows.  Like they’ve moved on and only a remnant of them is left there for me.  Like they’ve moved on and I’m stuck in the past.

The camera goes back to Mrs. Brunsik.  It is the present day.

INT. THERAPY SESSION ROOM- LATE AFTERNOON

MRS. BRUNSIK

So he invited you to the party?  Samuel?

The camera pans to Reece, and it is back to present time with his hat on.

REECE

Yeah.  Should I go?

MRS. BRUNSIK

Well, why would you want to go?

REECE

To see my friend, I guess.

MRS. BRUNSIK

What about meeting new people?

Reece is too anxious to meet other people.

REECE

I don’t know if I’d want to do that…

MRS. BRUNSIK

(encouraging)

I remember you telling me how lonely you are not so long back.  This will be good for you.

REECE

What if there’s alcohol there?  Or drugs?

MRS. BRUNSIK

Just don’t take them.  It’s that easy.

REECE

(looking for a way out)

Do I have to go?

MRS. BRUNSIK
You’ll regret it if you don’t.

Reece makes a disappointed face.

INT. REECE’S HOME- LATE AFTERNOON

KITCHEN

Reece is sitting at his kitchen table on his phone.  He is looking at a text from Samuel.

It says, “8736 White Drive- Be there at 8.”

Reece texts back, “ok.  i think i’ll be there.”

Reece turns off his phone and turns it on again to check the time.

The time is 7:23 PM.

John walks into the kitchen and sees Reece sitting, staring off.

JOHN
What’re you up to?

REECE

Can I go to a party at 8?

John chuckles.

JOHN

(spitefully)

You barely talk to me for a couple of

months and you want to go to a party?

REECE

(blankly)

My therapist said I should go.

JOHN

Oh, I forgot, you therapist.  She must know everything!  She must know better than us!  Right?

Reece doesn’t know what to say.

REECE

(hesitates)

I wouldn’t be going if I had to, but

she said it was best for me.

John thinks about it for a moment.

JOHN

Fine.  You can go.  Just be back by 11.

REECE

I will.

John walks out of frame.  Reece looks on.

EXT. PARTY HOUSE- NIGHT

FRONT LAWN

Reece walks out of his car and stands in front of the large house with some people walking inside.  Reece looks back at his car and thinks about going back.  Samuel then walks up behind him and scares him by grabbing his shoulders.  Reece is surprised and turns around.

SAMUEL

(playfully)

It’s only me, man!  Ready for this party?

REECE

(not sure)

I think so.

Reece says this anxiously.

SAMUEL

I’ll take your word for it then.  Let’s go.

They walk towards the house.

INT. PARTY HOUSE- NIGHT

LIVING ROOM

Reece is sitting on a well priced couch not really doing anything.  Around him, instead of party animals, are a ton of people sitting around each other and talking.  Some people are walking around and socializing, but besides that there’s not much movement.  Reece is a bit surprised by the calmness of the party.  The host of the party, CATHY, a good looking senior, walks by Reec and he stops her.

REECE

Uh, excuse me.

Cathy turns around and notices him.

CATHY

Yeah?

REECE

What do you have to drink here?

CATHY

(cheerfully)

Water, sodas, lemonades.  Y’know, the good stuff.  You can help yourself to some in the kitchen.

Cathy walks towards the other people to talk to them.  Reece walks into the kitchen to fetch himself a drink.

KITCHEN

There are two buckets with ice in them, and in the buckets with the ice are soda cans.  Reece picks up one and opens it up.  He takes a sip as Samuel walks into the kitchen.

SAMUEL

Great party, right man?

REECE

It’s alright.  Not exactly what I was expecting.

Reece looks around at the beautiful kitchen when he says this.

SAMUEL

Not all high school parties have to be Oktoberfest mixed with “Superbad”.

REECE

I’ve never been to one of these before, so I guess I just expected the classic rock and roll stuff you’d see on TV.

SAMUEL

(sincerely)

This is real life, man.  Enjoy it.

Samuel grabs a coke and starts to walk out of the room.  Reece is standing there, sipping is coke, thinking about that concept.  Samuel stops at the door frame.

SAMUEL

(stops)

Why don’t you come over and sit with us?  You can get to know some of my other friends.

Reece says yes.

REECE

Why not?

LIVING ROOM

Reece, Samuel, and his friends are sitting around on the couches talking to each other.  Samuel is lying his head in Cathy’s lap.  She is playing with his hair.  Everyone else is paired up with someone, or a group of people.  Reece is sitting by himself on the floor.

CATHY

So, Reece, what do you do for fun?  I feel like Samuel has never anything to say about you.  You’re like a mystery to me.

Reece gives her a chuckle to be polite, but can’t stop shaking, only a little bit though.

REECE

(awkwardly)

I-uh…play soccer.

CATHY

Who do you play for?  I know Samuel is

super excited about tryouts in a month.

Samuel looks up at Cathy and smiles.

REECE

I just play recreationally.

CATHY

(kindly)

So why don’t you try out with Sam?

REECE

I’m just not really feeling that

kind of thing right now.

Samuel whispers something into her ear.  It’s about his head scar.

CATHY

Oh.  Awkward again, I guess.  Can I see it?

REECE

(a bit confused)

See what?

CATHY

Your scar.

REECE

Oh, yeah.

(hesitates)

You don’t really want to see it, it

doesn’t look like much.

CATHY
Then why can’t we see it?

Reece doesn’t know what to say and looks at Samuel for help.

SAMUEL

Just show them.  We won’t care

if it’s super gross.

Instead of backup, Reece gets even more pressured.  DUKE, a jock highschooler, pipes in.

DUKE
I think we’d prefer it!

They laugh a bit at his joke.

REECE

I mean, it’s kind of pers-

Duke sits up and pulls the hat off his head.  He throws it across the room so Reece can’t get it.

REECE

Seriously?!

Reece tries to get up, but Duke keeps him down to look at the scar.  Everyone gets up to look.  Even Samuel.  When you get closer to the scar, the grosser it looks.

EXTREME CLOSE-UP

It’s long and white and bulging.  The bleach does a decent job at covering it.

CATHY

Wow!  All that from a boating accident?

SAMUEL

Yeah, doesn’t look like it.

Duke touches it and Reece flinches.

REECE

Fuck!

DUKE

(regretfully)

Oops.  Sorry.

Reece gets up to retrieve his hat.

SAMUEL

Did you bleach your hair to cover the scar?

REECE

Uh…yeah.

Reece puts his hat back on and adjusts it.  Reece walks off towards the kitchen.

SAMUEL

Where are you going?

REECE

I’m getting a soda.

Reece is obviously frustrated, and the group of other people chuckle a bit at it.

LATER

Reece walks into the Living Room with another Coke.  He sees that almost everyone is pairing off with each other, kissing.  Reece sits down on the floor and sips his coke while watching Duke and LINDA kissing.  He looks very closely until Duke looks towards him.  Reece immediately turns his head to hide his peeping.  Duke goes back to making out with Linda.  Reece looks around for Samuel and doesn’t see him.  He schooches over to Duke and taps him on the shoulder.  Duke ignores him at first, but Reece persists.  Duke finally acknowledges him.

DUKE

(annoyed)

What?

REECE

Did you see where Samuel went?

DUKE

Outside.

REECE

Thanks.

Duke goes back to kissing and Reece gets up to go outside.  Reece walks throughout the kitchen.

KITCHEN

He then gets to the front door, opens it, and walks out.

EXT. PARTY HOUSE- NIGHT

FRONT LAWN

Reece walks out to the front and sees Samuel and Cathy kissing under a light.  Reece is about to approach him, but when he gets closer, he sees his shadow facing towards him.  Reece looks at it and slowly steps back.  Samuel doesn’t notice Reece looking at him.  Reece runs over to his car and drops the coke in the grass.  He opens the car door and gets in.  We see all of this through the car window.  He starts up the car and drives off.  Samuel notices this and looks over.  He sees Reece leaving.

SAMUEL

Hey!  Reece!

Samuel stops kissing Cathy and runs over to Reece’s car.  It’s too late though, and Reece drives away.

INT. REECE’S CAR- NIGHT

Reece checks the  time on the car and it’s 10:00 PM.  He lets out a big gasp and stops the car on the side of the road.  He breathes heavily,  and tries to calm down.  He takes some deep breaths.  Reece turns on the radio and some music he likes comes on.  He leaves the car running and closes his eyes.

LATER

Reece is slumped down in his car seat, twitching a bit.  He jumps awake though, and hits his head on the dashboard.

REECE

Ow!

Reece looks around and sees that he left the car running the whole time he was out.  He checks the time on the car and sees that it’s 1 in the morning.  Reece rubs his eyes and yawns, not really paying attention to it at first.  He then realizes that he’s very late.  He tries driving the car, but it’s out of gas.  It moves a couple of feet, but stops.  Reece slams the wheel.

REECE

(frustratedly)

Shit!

Reece tries stomping on the gas pedal, but it still doesn’t move.  Reece opens the car door and steps out into the cool evening.

EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD STREET BY CAR- DAY

Reece pulls out his phone and tries turning it on.  It’s dead.

REECE

Shit.

Reece looks up at the street signs and starts following them towards his house.

BEGIN MONTAGE:

EXT. NICE NEIGHBOURHOOD- NIGHT

Reece walks past some nice houses and admires them.  He’s in a rich part of town.

EXT. NICE NEIGHBOURHOOD- NIGHT

Reece stops at an intersection and lets a car pass.

EXT. BUSY ROAD- NIGHT

Reece is walking on a sidewalk next to a busy road.  A lot of cars pass him.

EXT. REECE’S HOME- NIGHT

Reece finally gets home.  It’s two stories tall, but not fancy.  It’s a bit dirty on the bottom as well.  All of the lights except for the kitchen one are off.

END MONTAGE:

EXT. REECE’S HOME- NIGHT

FRONT PORCH

Reece tries the door and is surprised to see that it’s unlocked.  He walks into his house.

INT. REECE’S HOME- NIGHT

KITCHEN

Reece sees that his Father is waiting for him at the diner table.  John looks up and notices Reece is finally back.

JOHN

(angrily)

Reece!  Where the hell were you?

I’ve been up all night!

John gets up and waits for Reece’s response.  Reece runs towards his dad and hugs him.  John is taken aback by Reece’s embrace, but decides to go with it.  John hugs him tightly as well.

REECE’S ROOM

Reece is lying on his bed watching a video on his laptop with his headphones in.  He’s watching a video about how to become a christian.  LUKE is telling him how.

LUKE(YOUTUBE VIDEO)

Hello everyone!  This is Christian No

Heathens Youtube Channel, and today I’m going to be ranking the top 5 principles of a christian.  Let’s jump into it!

Reece doesn’t really want to watch it that much, but feels like he has to.

LUKE(YOUTUBE VIDEO)

Number 5-It’s okay to like people of other religions, but make sure not to accept them.  They have to know that it’s not alright what they are doing, so make sure that you like them, but you can’t accept them.  Same goes for gays.  But make sure to get real close up in the gays face to tell-

Reece turns off the laptop and drops it off of his bed.  He lays down and closes his eyes.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL- DAY

MATH CLASS

Reece is in Math Class laying his head on the table and barely paying attention.  MRS. CHADWICK is the new substitute teacher.  She’s teaching Algebra.  She notices Reece not really paying attention.

MRS. CHADWICK

Excuse me, boy in the back taking a nap.

Reece shoots up.

REECE

(tiredly)

I’m up.

MRS. CHADWICK

If you were up, then why don’t you tell us

how to solve a quadratic equation?

Reece notices that everyone is staring at him.

REECE

Well first…

Reece gets out of his chair and it looks like he’s walking towards the board.

REECE

So, first, you have to…

Right as he reaches the board, he takes a sharp turn towards the door.  He walks out into the hallway, almost mirroring Mr. Lukewell.

HALLWAYS

Reece wanders out into the hallway in a daze.  Mrs. Chadwick pokes her head out of the classroom and sees where he is going.

MRS. CHADWICK

(hesitantly)

Uhhh…on your way!

Reece doesn’t look back as Mrs. Chadwick goes back into her classroom.  He keeps on walking in a straight line towards the hallway with the camera in front of him.  The bell rings and kids rush out of the hallway.  They start to crowd Reece, who looks more depressed at the people flooding in.  He wants someone close, but can’t handle everyone around him.  People get closer and closer to him, not leaving any space for him to breathe.  Reece starts to hyperventilate as elbows push him around.  Reece slowly starts to scream, but with the noise around him, no one notices.  People around him are talking loudly as they usually would, and only the people standing right next to him notice.  They try to ignore him.  Reece stops and keeps on screaming while people walk around him.

CAFETERIA

Reece is sitting at a table by himself eating his lunch.  He only has an apple.  Samuel sits down across from him with his protein shake.

SAMUEL

What happened last night man?

REECE

(innocently)

What do you mean?

SAMUEL

You just got up and fucking left without

saying anything during the middle of the

party!

REECE

(bitterly)

Well, I didn’t have anyone to slobber over,

so I thought there wasn’t any reason for me

to stay.

SAMUEL

We were just taking a little break.

REECE

A teen pregnancy break?

SAMUEL

I really like that girl, okay?  She gets me.

REECE

How sweet.

Samuel pauses at the comment, not wanting to get too mad.

SAMUEL

I know you’re not happy about this, and I get

it, but she is the best part about my life right now!  We’ll still have time to hang out together, but it’s not like we even see each other that much anymore.  We’re growing apart and that’s natural!  Maybe we just need a little more space to get back to the good old days.

REECE

(seriously)

Are you trying to break up with me?

Samuel chuckles, but Reece is serious.  Samuel notices this and tries to explain himself a bit more.

SAMUEL

No, of course not!  And it’s not like we’re a couple either!  We’re just two good friends

that need some time to reconnect.

REECE

Just go be with her, it’s fine.

Reece doesn’t sound all that convincing, but Samuel wants to get this over with.

SAMUEL

Really?

REECE

Yeah, I got a ton of other shit to occupy

my time with.  You go live your life, man.

SAMUEL

We’re still friends right?

REECE

Of course…go be with her.

Samuel smiles and gets up.  He walks back to Cathy, and gives Reece a big grin.  Samuel gets there and sits down with her and starts to talk to her.  Reece watches on with envy.

INT. BLACK ROOM- NIGHT

Reece is in a completely black room sitting across from Cathy.  Reece has blood all over him, which is very pronounced.  Cathy is missing her lips and tongue which has been torn off.  Her hands are also torn off.  Her injuries look bad, but there is no blood on her clothes.  She still looks perfect, but not Reece.  He tries to get out of his chair, but can’t.  Cathay smiles back at him with her injuries and all.  Reece starts screaming, but you can’t hear it.  Cathy’s laughs overpower it.

BEGIN MONTAGE:

INT. REECE’S HOME- NIGHT

KITCHEN

Reece is sitting down, eating dinner.  He stares off as his parents try to talk to him.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL-DAY

MATH CLASS

Reece has his notebook out and is doodling in it.  It’s a bunch of scribbles.  He looks up and the teacher is staring at him, mad that he isn’t paying attention.

CAFETERIA

Reece is sitting at the lunch table by himself without any food.  He is writing in his journal.  He looks over and sees Samuel laughing with his other friends.

HALLWAYS

Reece is trying to open his locker, but can’t get the code right.  After lots of frustration, he bangs his head on it.

SCIENCE CLASSROOM

TEACHER #2, a science teacher, is handing out packets of work to the students, dropping it on their desks.  Reece is a bit spaced out and snaps back into the real world as the packet falls onto his desk.

INT. REECE’S HOME- NIGHT

REECE’S BEDROOM

Reece lies on his bed thinking.  He grabs his journal and looks through it.

EXT. SOCCER PITCH- DAY

Reece kicks the ball around, but just can’t get the touch right.  He throws it up in the air and punts it.

EXT. BAR HARBOR SHOPPING AREA

THE SHOPS

WIDE SHOT

Reece runs by a row of shops, with a lot of people in each one.  No one is on the sidewalks except for him.

END MONTAGE:

INT. HIGH SCHOOL- LATE AFTERNOON

HALLWAY OUTSIDE THEATER

Reece is walking by the theater slowly.  It’s the end of the school day, and Reece is worn out.  He’s about to pass it without blinking an eye, but hears some shouting from inside of it.  Reece turns his head and peeps it inside.  He sees OSCAR, a fifty year old, a bit scary looking teacher, yelling at BLAKE, a scared student.  It is a tryout for the school play.  Reece is interested and walks in.

THEATER

Reece sits down in the far back and watches on.  Oscar starts to rip into Blake.

OSCAR

No, no, no.  What are you, some kind

of tree that grew the ability to talk?

BLAKE

(scared)

No…

OSCAR

(frustratedly)

Then why are you so fucking stiff?

BLAKE

(stuttering)

I-I don’t k-know.

OSCAR

Are you sure you walked into the right department?  Maybe you meant to go to the library?  You sure do look like it.

BLAKE
N-no.

OSCAR

Then fucking act!  It’s not rocket science!
