Level one: dragon companion

Your Dragon egg hatches and you begin to bond with it

Roll a D6 to determine what type of dragon hatched

1= brass

2= bronze

3= copper

4= silver

5= gold

6= reroll

Evil alternative (must be of an evil alignment to use. DMs discretion)

1= black

2= green

3= white

4= blue

5= red

6= reroll

Eldunari: an extension of the dragon is its eldunari, its “heart of hearts”. A dead dragon can flee into this in the moments of its death and preserve its consciousness. This is a gem like stone that can hold the mind of the dragon. If you were to use a resurrection spell on the eldunari the dragon will regrow around it and you will have your companion back

Spellcasting: Your spell casting ability is based on your charisma score. 

Saving throws is: 8+proficiency + charisma mod

Attack bonus is: Spellcasting mod + Proficiency
You can ritual cast

Your spell list is the same as the sorcerer. Spells known is equal to your Charisma mod plus your half your dragon rider level rounded down

You can use an arcane focus as described in the PHB

Limited telepathy: due to your bond with your dragon you have telepathy out to 30 feet. You can speak to each other in common or draconic if both you and your dragon know draconic. Commands can be given telepathically or verbally. Obeys commands within reason. Dragons are not born knowing draconic. If you know draconic you can teach your dragon draconic.This increases to 1200 at sixth level , 2100 feet at ninth level, 3000 feet at 11th level, one mile at fourteenth level

Level 7, 13, and 19: Dragon Improvement: these are improvements to boost the bond between you and your dragon. Choose one whenever you gain a dragon improvement 

Dual Mind: While connected to your dragon, you both have advantage on saving throws against being charmed

Dual Body: You can see and hear through your dragon just as you would a familiar. You also have advantage on perception checks while checking the same thing


Center of Chaos: In battle, you and your dragon are synonymous. The scalpel and the hammer. While within 5 feet of each other, you both gain +2 to your damage role

Aura of ferocity: all allies within a 20 foot radius of you and your dragon gain +2 on attack rolls

Magical beings: You can cast spells through your dragon, and have them gain any hit points or temp hit points that the spell may provide (ex vampiric touch) and vice versa

Draconic aspect: some aspects of your dragon have taken form in you and changed you and you enjoy the following benefits

If you don't already have darkvision, you gain it to 60 feet. If you do already have darkvision, its extended to 120 feet

You gain blindsight to 10 feet

As an action, you can enjoy some of the power your dragon has. For 5 minutes the draconic aspects of the bond materilate. 

-Dragon wings (similar to your dragons wings) sprout from your back giving you a flight speed equal to half of your dragons flight speed

-scales harden around your body, your AC becomes 13+your dex mod

-Your fingers transform into a dragon's claws. They are a natural magical weapon that deal 2d6 slashing and have the finesse property

Path of the warrior: amongst the dragon riders there are those that train and hone their arcane skills. You are not one of them. You are the embodiment of fury and warfare. 

When you choose this path at level one you gain proficiency in martial weapons, medium and heavy armor and can choose one fighting style from the Paladin List

Extra attack: you gain an extra attack at 5th level and 10th level

Level 14: Draconic weapon: As an action you may enchant your weapon to do 2d6 damage appropriate to your dragons type 

Level 17: Precision: you can add your dex mod to an attack roll a number of times equal to your dex mod. If this would cause the role to go over 20 then it counts as a crit. You cannot use this ability if you are under the influence of spells or abilities like bless or aid.

Path of the mage: Some hone their combat ability to become the best warriors they can be. You on the other hand, have dived into the arcane and done your best to hone your magical skills.

When you choose this path at level one your entire spellcasting ability is improved and the level at which you can cast spell drastically improves

Expanded spell list: You learn some path spells that don't count against your spells known

1st level dragon rider: hellish rebuke and identify

3rd level dragon rider: blindness/deafness and ray of enfeeblement

5th level dragon rider: Vampiric touch and glyph of warding 

7th level dragon rider: Mordenkainen's private sanctum and Otiluke's Resilient Sphere 

9th level dragon rider: Rary's telepathic bond and scrying

5th level feature: potent spellcasting: you can add your charisma mod to your cantrips damage

10th level feature: Dragons fury: Whenever you cast a spell that does the same damage as your dragons breath weapon, roll your dragons breath weapon damage die and add it to the spells damage

14th level feature: dragons enchantment: You can enchant a piece of armor/clothing to give you a flight speed of 20 and resistance to the damage associated with your dragon

17th level feature: combined casters: Once per long rest you may refill all spell slots of any level below 6th level

Creators Notes:

Some of these original features (such as the race restriction) were designed with the inheritance lore in mind.

The core of the class is based around improving the dragon and your bond with it. The subclasses are meant to define you as a character and how you interact with your dragon. A “path of the warrior” dragon rider might be up in the fray fighting side by side with his dragon while a “path of the mage” might sit back a little farther and buff his dragon with spells such as enlarge or using the dragon to harry their foes with the breath attack of the dragon.
