Fighter, Houndmaster Martial Archetype

A Houndmaster is a warrior who has found companionship and camaraderie with a fierce and capable canine. As a Houndmaster, you have spent considerable time bonding and training with your bestial ally, turning this canine into an extension of your own combat prowess.

Tame the Beast

At level 3, you gain proficiency in Animal Handling, if you don't have it already.

The Hound

At level 3, you gain the ability to form a powerful bond with a beast of the natural world called the Hound. The Hound is a canine that takes any form you choose, but uses the statistics of the wolf from the Monster Manual, with the exception of the following changes:

  • The Strength Save DC of the Hound's Bite attack is equal to 10 + its Strength modifier.

  • The Hound's AC is equal to 11 + its Dexterity modifier.

The Hound gains a variety of benefits while it is linked to you.

The Hound obeys your commands as best it can. It rolls for initiative like any other creature, but you determine its actions, decisions, attitudes, and so on. If you are incapacitated or absent, your companion acts on its own.

The Hound can perform the following actions in combat: Attack, Dash, Disengage, Dodge, Help, Hide, Ready, and Search. The Hound may Grapple or Shove as an Attack as well.

The Hound has abilities and game statistics determined in part by your level. The Hound uses your proficiency bonus rather than its own. In addition to the areas where it normally uses its proficiency bonus, the Hound also adds its proficiency bonus to its AC and to its damage rolls.

The Hound gains proficiency in two skills of your choice. It also becomes proficient with all saving throws.

For each level you gain after 3rd, the Hound gains an additional hit die and increases its hit points accordingly. Whenever you gain the Ability Score Improvement class feature, the Hound's abilities also improve. The Hound can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or it can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, the Hound can’t increase an ability score above20 using this feature unless its description specifies otherwise.

The Hound shares your alignment, and has a personality trait and a flaw that you can roll for or select from the tables below. The Hound shares your ideal, and its bond is always, “The fighter who travels with me is a beloved companion for whom I would gladly give my life.”

Coordinated Attack

Beginning at 7th level, you and the Hound form a more potent fighting team. When you use the attack action on your turn, if the Hound can see you, it can use its reaction to attempt a Grapple or a Shove on a creature within its melee range

Man's Best Friend

At 10th level, the Hound begins to exude a powerful aura of comfort and security. As an action on its turn, the Hound grants temporary hit points to all friendly creatures of your choice within 10 feet of it. These temporary hit points are equal to double the Hound's Charisma score, and last for 1 minute. Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until after completing a long rest.

Harry the Prey

Starting at 15th level, while the Hound is within 5 feet of an ally, the first melee attack a creature makes on their turn against that ally has Disadvantage.

Extra Hound Attack

Starting at 18th level, the Hound can attack twice, instead of once, whenever it takes the Attack action on its turn.

Surge of Claws and Fangs

At 18th level, whenever you use the Action Surge feature, the Hound gains the same benefits on its next turn.
