House Rules

Character Creation:

You should allocate stats using the standard array or point buy.

You are encouraged to create a custom background instead of using the normal options. Choose proficiency in two skills and proficiency in two languages, instruments, artisans tools, or one kit.

You start with basic armor and weapons but you may choose your remaining starting equipment based on your character’s backstory (with slight DM discretion).

At the time of character creation, no more than half the party (rounded up) can be magic users. This includes classes, subclasses, races, and feats. (I have created an optional non-magical Ranger.)

Encumbrance:
If you carry weight in excess of 5 times your Strength score, your speed drops by 10 feet. If you carry weight in excess of 10 times your Strength score, your speed drops by 20 feet and you have disadvantage on any d20 rolls that use Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution.

Armor weighs half of its normal weight while being worn.

Death & Injury:

All death saving throws are rolled by the player in secret.

If you are reduced to zero hit points, you gain one level of exhaustion unless you succeed a DC 10 Constitution saving throw.

If cover causes an attack to miss, the cover takes the attack.

Resting Rules:
Short rests last eight hours and follow the same restrictions as long rests. If you have access to food and water, you can regain one hit die at the end of a short rest.

Long rests last twenty-four hours and follow their normal restrictions. You must have access to food, water, and shelter to gain the benefits of a long rest. You do not automatically restore lost Hit Points, but you can spend hit dice to regain hit points.

Class Modifications:

Artificer – Not allowed

Cleric – Receives divine power from their deity (options are based on the campaign setting).

Paladin – Receives divine power from their deity (options are based on the campaign setting).

Warlock – Receives arcane power from their patron (options are based on the campaign setting).

Wizard – Arcane Recovery: Once per long rest.

Additional Features:

The following are optional buffs to existing features. You are free to ignore them, though many of these changes will appear in the campaign:
