Sum up all your monthly expenses (house, car, food, beer, etc), divide by the number of hours you want to work per month as a freelancer and that is you bare minimum – minus taxes – just to keep the lights on.

After that add tax margins and savings overhead (for those times when nothing is happening).

Then check the market for what are the ballpark figure from junior to senior, and see where you fit. You can always adjust if your calculated value is below what seems market-fair. If your calculated value is way above the market rate you think you belong to then something’s wrong. Either you are working less than you should or your expenses are skyrocketing 🙂
