Karalorn

Player Quick look

Howdy! I’m so excited and happy you all have decided to jump head-first into this campaign! I really want this to be a collaborative experience, where we all have fun, and build something marvelous! Below we will have a breakdown of some general structure for the game and background of the world so we can be efficient about our session 0.

Tone: Karalorn is a mix of some high fantasy, but mostly rooted in traditional fantasy setting. Some places are inspired by real world culture. This is a campaign of choice and consequences. Players should be ready to invest emotionally into the game. Fun and laughs will be had, sorrow will come, and it will be serious at times.

*Rulings/Leveling Rule Choice:

A good healthy mix of rule of cool with rules as written. Whatever makes logical sense will be the course of action. Leveling will be earned through Milestone.

Combat Style/Interface:

Roll20 and Theater of the mind via Discord

Action/Combat Style:

Cinematic. Effort will be given on the DM’s part to narrate a lot of the detail and action in combat. Any help from the players is encouraged!

The world will have enough grit to feel dangerous. Hard and Deadly Encounters will be Hard and Deadly. Easy or Medium encounters will also be balanced appropriately. I am not your enemy but you should recognize that you can’t kill a Kraken at level 1.

Any encounter that is overmatched (from a combat perspective) for the player’s level will be treated with appropriate levity. For example, if an ancient red dragon encounters the party at level 1, description of the immense size and power of the creature will be described as a forewarning to maybe run, find a way to avoid combat, etc.

Encounters will be designed to push the story forward, allow for character development, and create suspense, engagement, and excitement for the players.

Tracking Inventory/Other

Encumbrance will only be tracked if players push the limitations of carrying capacity (ie 500 weapons in a backpack).

You will need the components for your spells that have a gold cost to them (even for rituals like Identify) so plan accordingly/we can talk out of game so you purchase them in town if you don’t wish to rp it out.

The Setting:

It has been 40 years since the Klovaskian Empire announced it’s intent to conquer the known world. The nations, mistrusting of each other for centuries, bickered as the empire conquered The Republic of Coriba into its fold. The Great Sage pleaded with the empire to halt it’s advance, and strangely it listened.  It has now been almost half a century and dark rumors of Empire troops on the move are stirring. What is worse, it is feared that the empress has dabbled in powers no mortal should.

You and four others have made your way to Eastwatch in the Kingdom of Josai.  From there the world is full of choices. What will you do? Will you stand firm and defeat the enemies of the world? Will you avoid conflict, seeking out your riches and fame for yourself? Will you defeat evil, only to be seduced by it’s allure. The choice is up to you.

Introduction

Welcome reader! Thank you for taking the time to read this player handbook for my homebrew. I remember sitting in my  cubicle at work one day and thinking: what would it be like if the roman empire was in D&D,  but the emperor was evil and dabbled in dark magic? So began my long fascination with the idea and Karalorn was born. This guide will help you with general information about the world, as well as a spring into getting an idea for what would go into making a player for this campaign. This guide is not:

1. A comprehensive lore document.

2.  Perfect.

3. Set in stone

I believe D&D is best when you are given enough information that your character would know, and no more. As such, you will find lots of general info, and if you want more, you are just gonna have to do some digging at the great library of Zoria.  It is my wish to create a beautiful tale of good vs evil, heartful moments, and tearful tragedy. So without much more delay- welcome to Karalorn!

Beginnings

The beginning of Karalorn is more myth than history, but it is said that the Sun Princess danced with the Moon Brother. These two have always been. Their dancing created the land and the sea. It created all living things and everything that exists today. With their laughter, the planes of existence meshed with the ethereal planes (This world exists somewhat in the forgotten realms multiverse). When they departed, great was the sadness of the two, that the Sun princess cried, bringing magic into the world, the Moon Brother’s wails and pain became death itself. Still they dance today, but only very briefly meeting in the sky to become one again.

They were not the only beings in the universe. The Pale Queen, jealous of the affections of the moon brother, set about to create her own creations to woo the Moon Brother into dancing with her. She created 6 figures of immense power. These 6 become Gods and Goddesses of the world.

Karathas- God of Strength and Mystical Arts- LE- The Shield and a Eye
Corabus- God of Wisdom  and Music- N- The Harp

Salfalus- God of Fire and Earth- CG- A Blaze and Boulder

Ishalia- Goddess of Water and Nature- A tree with a water drop

Rorakira- Goddess of Wind and Animals- Wind with a Falcon

Norcilla- Goddess of Winter and Fear- A Wolf and a Serpent

These 6 beings went and claimed the lands of Karalorn. The pale queen was displeased that still the moon brother wept for the sun princess. In the Pale Queen’s rage, she blew a hole through time and the universe. The constant surge of power allowed for God’s, beings of power, to come forth which were not originally from this world.

Greater Beings

The world is full of strange and powerful beings. Some are good, and seek justice in the world. Some are evil and desire chaos. These are but a few of these beings.

The Beauty Collector- An Arch Fey of extreme narcissism, collects all things beautiful.

The Jade Witch- A spirit of  nature, fresh and radiant as spring.

Fiasmat- A demon of black and shadow, searches for souls to bargain with.

Isabella the White- A lady of brilliant radiance, seeks wounded warriors and thieves.

Nosto the Black- A giant toad of great evil. He seeks those to  help devour the world.

Have an idea for a patron? Want to bring your own awesome deity? Then by all means! Let's collaborate!

Nations

The nations of Karalorn are divided into the islands in which they reside. It was rare that any war existed between them. Thousands upon thousands of years passed without conflict. Yet now, all this world has seen is war and conflict. While the Klovaskian Empire is the center of conflict in this campaign, there are other nations that are fully explorable. The choice is yours whether to engage in the conlfict.

The Klovaskian Empire- Nestled on the island of Kalaroa, the home of Karathas. The Empire began as a humble kingdom of simple fishermen. The settlement of King’s port grew and grew until it came into conflict with the island resident’s (Elvish, halfling, dwarven cities etc). It was the man Zorthis, who took control of the kingdom of men, and conquered and integrated the cultures of the island into one and formed the empire. 500 years later, the empire has conquered new territory, and dark rumors of the empress working with foul magic loom large.

-Primarily Human

-Wealthy yet can see great swaths of the poor

-Inspired by the Roman Empire

-It is the most populated in the world

-The south is arid, while it stretches north for more snowy conditions.

The Kingdom of Josai- The central kingdom in Karalorn. Centuries ago, the races on Ishla Island banded together to fight a great black dragon. The result of that alliance became the Kingdom of Josai. In its current state: it is the head of current diplomatic efforts, in order to appease the growing threat of the Empire.

-Evenly Elvish and Human

– It is of moderate prosperity.

– Elements of Japanese culture, mixed in with LOTR.

– The people are very scared of any coming conflict.

– Moderate wealth

-It’s weather is mostly green with dry winters

The Rokari Dominion- The second largest island and nation. It is wild and in some parts it is untamed. The dominion is a sort of semi state of controlled smaller cities. Elves, Humans, Dwarves and many others will come together in times of crisis, but this has not happened in quite some time.

-Dwarves make up the majority

– Wild, untamed land

– Viking, and Dark age soceity

– Wild Beasts grow to be huge

-Relishing a fight, these people will thrust themselves into war.
-Only the dwarves hold great wealth

The Nation of Lorica- Lorica is a faction of mild political standing. The nation was founded by explorers a few centuries ago. The city of Milam stands tall, yet it is the only major settlement and only base of power. The people are calm, quiet, and hold many secrets. The island should be cold and freezing, but it is a harsh jungle and desert. Why this is only a few know

– Small population

– Based on renaissance and arabic culture

– Lush jungles are home to many secrets.

– There is a large population of dragonborn from this nation
-Wealthy, despite its size

The Kingdom of Isocora- The frozen north breeds tough people. Isocora may be the smallest kingdom in the world, but it’s people are tough and deep magic run’s through their veins. Norcilla favors them greatly. It is home to many types of people.

–  The smallest nation in the world

– Based on Russian culture

– Poor and non extravagant lifestyles

– Magic runs strong through this place

The Republic of Coribi was lost and conquered by the Klovaskian Empire. Rumors among many say that a noble heritage is out there. that could claim the throne. Got questions? Wanna know more? Let's have a conversation!

Factions

There are many factions in the world, some well known and some secret. Here is a list of some of the most prominant ones that may be of interest. Of course there could be more or less depending on your background or plot development.

Paladin Orders

The Order of the Hallowed Hand– A order of Paladins who feel death is the only true salvation for the unjust.

The Order of the Sacred Tree- A order of Paladins devoted to the forests and all nature.

The Dorodai- A Nomadic people who live in the most northern parts of Karalorn

The Iron Weasel– Fighter guild with strong natural tendencies

The Hands of Creation- Inventors Guild always creating new things

The Black Rabbit Trading Company-  One of the largest trading companies in the world.

Capitals

There are many locations in Karalorn. Many have history, some are new to the world. As a player, there are some places you should know. Favorite part: I wonder what ideas you can come up with for Karalorn and its places?

Zoria-  The capital of the Klvoskian Empire, named after the first emperor. It supplies water to much of the surrounding area. A great library is here, which holds much knowledge.

Jurtih- The second largest city in the empire, it is more free willed and rebellious of the empire’s cities. It is one of the last major settlements before the northern parts of the empire.

Havantra- The conquered city of Coraba Island. It is located in some of the coldest parts of the world.  The empire currently keeps the city on martial watch still to this day.

Milam- The lone city of worth on Salfala Island. The community is mixed and magical. The temple of the heart of fire is located here.

Foggy Port- The largest city in the dominion. It is a little behind in terms of technology, but makes up in defensive capabilities. It is known for a deep fog that covers the bay.

Wild Watch- The smallest major city in all the world. It has no walls, no real sense of structure. The walls of the city are its warriors. The city is in the middle of dense woods.

This is but a sample of what is to come, I hope you will join in the fun!
