Roblox Sales, Troubles and the Future

Before I begin, I’d like to mention that these are my sole ideas for future Roblox sales, I take full responsibility for any outcome. People who contributed to this document were asked by myself, Younite, and did not contribute to the writing of this article.



Roblox Sales: Troubles and Futures

Hello Roblox. My name is Oisín, and I go by the username Younite. I am an 8 year Roblox veteran, a Top Contributor and Champion on the Devforums, worked on the Egg Hunt 2018 and Egg Hunt 2019 as the UI designer, have attended multiple Roblox events including BloxCon 2013 London, Maker Faire 2014 and 2015, REM 16 and RDC 2017, 2018 and 2019. I have participated in Roblox sales since 2013, and have written this document to deliver my ideas and wishes, for future Roblox sales. Roblox sales are and have been a staple in the Roblox tradition and economy, providing a fun and exclusive way of being able to get your favourite items for a reduced price, as well as including some high profile items like rare limited faces, gear, and hats, an example being the Dominus Rex in 2015. Unfortunately, Roblox sales have slowly deteriorated, to the point that they are no longer fun. I have decided to write this document to outline some of the issues I have noticed, offering solutions, plus a detailed hour-by-hour mock sale timetable – including items that would be beneficial to include in sales – as reference for a future possible sale. As a major sale, the 2018 Black Friday sale, is coming up, I hope that this file may be of use for Black Friday, and beyond. I have divided this topic into 5 sections: What Doesn’t Work, What Will Work, Sale Polls, Timetable, and Conclusion. If something I have said in this document is wrong, or needs more elaboration, I will provide my contact details at the end of the document.


1. What Doesn’t Work

To begin, I’d like to highlight a few reasons why other sales have worked with the majority of the community, while more recent ones haven't. 

  1. Items

    1. Fairly straightforward, but the previous sales gathered tons of hype because of the items presented in it. Sure, silverthorn antlers made a return, as they always do, but it wasn't workclocks/wings/antlers all the time. The current sales are easily predictable, and not that interesting compared to sales from 2014 and before.

  1. Advertising

    1. What got me extremely excited about the sales were the teasers beforehand. For instance, the 2013 Black Friday sale.

      The sales’s blog posts told us exactly what would be happening, but didn't show off everything. Right now, these blog posts may look like they have the same premise, but they don't.

  1.  Currently, the Roblox Twitter tweets about items, but half an hour later isn't terribly useful, even well after a limited has sold out.

  1. Waves

    1. What is probably the most crucial part of the sale, are the item waves. Before, it used to be items every hour, with a break during the night, but right now it's generally 1 item every 2-3 hours. It gets extremely annoying when you’re waiting for an hour, just to be disappointed with a baseball cap for 5 robux. Most of the LMaD community are here to make profit, so a cheap baseball cap doesn't really work with much of that community after waiting for 3 hours. The feeling of disappointment when something doesn’t come out after you waited for hours is immeasurable.

  1. Premium Items

    1. I thought I would name this part 'Premium Items’ because these items would generally be considered more elusive than others, limiteds and retextures. 

    2. Previously, we’d be getting ~10+ limiteds, including original and older items becoming limited. Right now, it feels like 5. Not only are they not even good items to make limited (https://www.roblox.com/catalog/398673908/Katana-Traveling-Pack) but that there are so many better items to make limited. I will be giving examples of this in my mockup timetable. I don't mind limiteds with a ton of stock and a timer, but please don't do it on all limiteds. The katana pack was an item that was already on-sale, that had over 200,000 sales, and there are tons of items that deserve a spot at being limited than an item that you can still get.

    3. Retextures, on the other hand, have been completely ignored. Unless Roblox has abandoned that idea (and if they have, that is frankly one of the worst decisions I've ever heard of), then I see no reason why they should stop it. Not only are they getting high quality items produced by the community, but they're items that people want to be retextured, hence them going out of their way for it. I have plenty of ideas on how to revive retextures, and to solve all of the issues, so if you would like me to elaborate on this, please let me know.

  1. Fun Value

    1. Truth is, Roblox sales aren't fun anymore. They aren't as fun as how they used to be 5 years ago, although, I will give you props for the last sale. The end of it was a mess, with the immortal sword breaking (https://twitter.com/Roblox/status/1036699126015176706), and the radioactive beast mode selling out instantly, but it was quite a fun mess. I think Roblox not having complete control over what happened made it better, in my honest opinion. Regardless, I feel that Roblox are out of touch with what the community wants, and even with the sale polls, they aren't working – granted, the past sales haven't had a poll. If you've stopped polls, there's a couple of people including myself, who would love to help suggesting items for all future sales. I'm hoping that this document will help Roblox create a better sale the next time. 

2. What Will Work

I'll keep this part simple and straightforward, with just my ideas for how each of the points I mentioned below can be improved.

  1. Items

    1. To start off, bring back more classic items, instead of the regular ones. Silverthorn antlers are dead in the ground because of how many times they were brought back, bigheads are next. Differentiate the sale. Bring back items we don't expect. Surprise us.

    2. There are 12,317 items currently in the catalog, half of these are unavailable and around 2,000 of them are limited. That means that there’s around 6,000 items that can possibly go limited. Even if they’re obscure, classic items, there’s a plethora of choices you can make. I’ll be listing a few items on the timetable in part 4.

    3. Back in 2015, there was a reported 205 unused items. Some of these items are incredible, and would be amazing to bring out, and would mean that Roblox wouldn’t have to have new items made especially for the sale, when they have a backlog to work with.

  1. Advertising

    1. Make the blog post more exciting, as well as teasing items on other platforms like Facebook/Twitter, and please don't tease the same items that we already saw on the blog. Tweets 30 minutes after the item came out don't work as the majority of people who take part in sales know where to check for items, and have many notifiers. As said before, we love surprises.

  2. Waves

    1. I talked about this on twitter (https://twitter.com/_Younite/status/1036404059215986688)

and asked whether people would like to know when items would be releasing, but not which items would be releasing at that hour. I was met with an overwhelming vote of nearly 500, and I feel like that may be something to consider.

  1. Regarding waves, having a wave an hour with 5 items would be so much more interesting than getting your hopes up every hour. As I said before, I'll be including all of this in the mockup sale timetable.

  2. Instead of making the ‘Classic’ wave just one wave, which I’d like to mention, is a highly anticipated wave, you scatter classics all around the sale instead of just one place! I’ll be showing what I mean in the sale timetable.

  1. Premium Items

    1. Please bring back retextures. It’s an amazing concept, and high quality items made by the community are only a click away.

    2. With limiteds, what would be ideal are more older items becoming limited than newer items. A better feeling is having a rare item you own become limited, compared to possibly missing out on an item during a wave. Please make more obscure items limited instead of items with 200,000 sales. Right now it's predictable, surprise us. 

  1. Fun Value

    1. With these suggestions, the quality and enjoyment of sales would improve tenfold. I really hope that you can take it in your stride and deliver a much better sale that appeals to more than just one age demographic.

3. Sale Polls

Finally, I made a poll the Monday after the sale, which was quite surprising.

I did enjoy the end of the sale, and I will give you props for the end, but the other polls show that there still seems to be an underlying issue with the community.

4. Timetable


I wanted to make a mockup timetable for a future sale, to help Roblox out in the future. I’ve asked a couple of friends and we’ve come up with a small list of items that would be perfect in a sale. We’ve kept along the traditional sale rules, incorporating the times when the sale isn’t happening as well. Some items will have numbers beside them, and at the bottom of the timetable, will be the explanations for all of them. I will be including 1-2 retextures too, and will provide the link to them at each sale day timetable, for reference. All times are in PST, and each sale day lasts from 9am to 9pm, but can be adjusted to fit any 12 hour duration. Note: I am only including items that should go limited or on-sale, as I do not know what other items will be releasing. Status will be either L for limited, or O for on-sale. Without further adieu, I present the unofficial sale timetable.

1 : This was a competition item, but other competition items have gone limited, including the Antenna Antlers.

2: ASCII White has gone on-sale in the past, and would be incredible to have back onsale or limited, regardless of the controversy that surrounds it.

3: We did not have the traditional limited eggs for last March-April, and now would be a great time to include them. The three I picked are the communities’ fan favourite. Having the word ‘Fabergé’ in the item title shouldn’t mean that the item shouldn’t go limited either, as it can just be changed, and that other fabergé styled egg designs have been named an eggbergé or something along those lines.

?: A rainbow sparkletime fedora would be an incredible add to the catalog and series. I did reference a retexture initially, but anyone can add a rainbow gradient to a UV map, and make an original texture.

?: Epic Face would be incredible to go on-sale, in the past, it was never allowed, but now that Roblox are able to use it for commercial use, they have the power to make it limited.

5. Conclusion

Sales are something that quite a lot of people in the community hold dear to their heart. The rapid decrease in sales quality has done more bad than good, and I feel like now is a good time to turn it around.
In conclusion, I feel like sales are a wonderful feature, that can definitely be improved, with some support from the community. I hope that you truly take in this information, and make the Black Friday 2018 sale the best one yet!
