Falkner

Falkner has 6 pokemon which are all flying. The biggest challenge with this gym is being able to beat all of them in quick succession.

All of Falkner’s Pokémon have Aerial Ace, therefore making encounters with them difficult as they can 2 shot most Pokemon and sometimes one hit grass and bug types, so don't use them.

Electric, Ice & rock all deal 2x to all of them, while bug, grass and fighting deal 0.5x. Except for murkrow which takes normal damage from bug and fighting due to dark typing. Training a rock type will give it usability as it will be super effective on the majority of the first two gym leaders

Be very Careful with Pidgeotto as it has Roost and high attack & speed stats

Bugsy
HeartGold SoulSilver Bugsy.png
HeartGold SoulSilver Bugsy.png

Bugsy is a much stronger gym leader than Falkner due to his more varied move selection and overall stronger stated pokemon. His hardest hitter Scyther has extraordinary speed, and will outspeed most pokemon below level 25. Butterfree’s rain dance can ruin things for teams reliant on fire pokemon while Pinsir and heracross can demolish rock pokemon with vital throw and counter. Beedrill is likely to poison as Twin-needle has in total a 36% chance to poison. Yanma’s and Scyther’s U-turn can easily be pulled off when weak due to their high speed. You will definitely lose if Scyther is allowed to set up 2 sword dances so kill him as quickly as possible. Scyther has a  Sitrus Berry and Bugsy can use 1 moomoo milk. Try to make him waste it on Butterfree. I recommend about 2-3 pokemon with super effective moves preferably STAB on pokemon with levels between 20-24. Try to vary them as rock will do 4x to Bug/flying but will be at a disadvantage to Heracross and Pinsir’s fighting moves.

Rival Battle 1

He will only fight you after slowpoke well, you can enter Ilex forest beforehand without fighting him. This battle is much easier than Bugsy and most of the time your rival will be using stat debilitating moves such as scary face, mean look, Spite and Kinesis. To counter this swap pokemon after each fight to keep at full fighting force. Dark & electric moves are most useful.

Route 34

  • Route 34 has the daycare, up to two pokemon can be deposited and will receive 1xp per step taken.

  • Route also contains TM Aerial Ace

  • This route is one which has no magikarp while fishing which makes it a good spot to train grass types

  • Fire, Water & thunder stones can be found in goldenrod to evolve Eevees

GoldenRod City

Goldenrod City has many important places;

  •  the radio card for your pokegear from the receptionist at the radio tower, the casino which can be used to get rare pokemon (most are now accessible outside of this now)

  • the archeological building (south east) which will give you the: Dome, Helix, Claw, Root, Skull and Armour fossils which the man at the counter can then revive allowing you to get Omanyte, Kabuto, Lileep, Anorith, Cranidos and Shieldon.

  • Both bulk up and keen mind can be got from the pokecenter as well as you choice of a level 20 generation 4 starter (turtwig, piplup, chimchar)

  • Be careful as ethan will battle you when entering the underground passage

The national park contains large amounts of bug pokemon. The bug catching tournament is on tuesday. Both the shell bell as well as the quick claw can be found within

Whitney
HeartGold SoulSilver Whitney.png
HeartGold SoulSilver Whitney.png

Whitney is a strong gym leader who can easily match and overpower pokemon of similar level, all of her pokemon are female as well as knowing the move attract, this move after use will infatuate the opposing pokemon and acts like a more effective paralysis at 50% while paralysis only has a 25% chance to stop moves. Many pokemon can paralyse with the move body slam, if a pokemon is paralyzed as well as infatuated they will only have a 37% chance to attack. This move makes male pokemon have a significant disadvantage when fighting. Fighting moves are your best bet as all of her pokemon are normal types. Whitney is also able to use 2 super potions to help stabilize her pokemon. 1 strategy is to buff a pokemon using either bulk up or keen mind (in the pokemon center) while fighting Likitung and then steamroll her pokemon, the other is to maximise type advantage and use many fighting type moves such as rock smash or brick break

Rival Battle 2

This battle will begin within the burned tower just before the ladder down and just after the talk with Eusine

The rival in this battle hasn’t improved his pokemon by much since the last fight with most pokemon only leveling up by 6 levels this results in an anticlimactic battle. His types have not improved as so electric and dark will be your best bet for killing him quickly, their moves have improved with psybeam, Nightshade and ice fang which complement his team. Even though his pokemon are ~3 levels higher than Whitney, i still believe she is more of a challenge

I Recommend dark & electric moves hopefully with lv30 pokemon

Morty
HeartGold SoulSilver Morty.png
HeartGold SoulSilver Morty.png

All of Morty’s pokemon are ghost type, meaning normal and fighting moves will never hit them. The best types to use include dark and ghost types due to 2x damage, as well as steel types, which are resistant to both ghost and dark types in generations 2-5.  Many of his pokemon have the debilitating move mean look, which prevents your pokemon from switching out. This however thankfully does not coincide with some of his pokemon’s abnormal moveset such as Gengar’s giga drain and Sableye’s Ariel Ace, both Gengar and Haunter are able to use hypnosis which can be annoying and so you could wait to use your strongest pokemon in order to one or two hit ko them. I recommend a party level of 30 however the fight will become very easy with a dark type above Lv 32 or a high Sp Def steel type (aren't many).

CianWood City:

Eusine

Eusine is a much easier fight as most of his pokemon use a large amount of stasis moves, and seem to have few type deviant moves. If you see your pokemon being lower than 30, then prioritise killing his Jumpluff who knows leech seed. The electrode knows thunder which can devastate unprepared trainers due to its 120 power. Most of his pokemon have low HP so they can be easily killed with even 2-3 non-super effective moves.

Chuck’s pokemon are surprisingly fast, often outspeeding pokemon higher than themselves. They also have high attack resulting in a difficult fight. Be careful of the substitute focus punch combo of primeape which has the power to knock out pokemon easily. Try to utilise psychic and flying moves. Flying is an ineffective type against primeape, Poliwrath and most likely hitmonchan due to the elemental punches such as thunder punch. Hariyama however, is extremely weak to flying as his type deviant move is Earthquake.

Executive Petrel

A surprisingly difficult fight. All of his pokemon either have powerful moves such as super fang and thunder, or have very high stats for their level. Be careful. 75% of his pokemon are poison therefore pick types which punish this (Ground or Psychic) The Golbat’s super fang is dangerous as it can outspeed many pokemon halving their HP in an instance, it also knows hypnosis which can stall fights and put you at a disadvantage. Wheezing and Stunktank are unreliant on Super fang rather dealing damage due to their high SP- Attack stat. Be careful sending out pokemon against them. Read the moves below to determine you can send out against them.

Executive Ariana

Ariana was a much easier fight than that of Petrel, while her pokemon are higher level, their overall stats are lower. As most of her pokemon are different types it’s much easier to beat her with 3-4 well leveled pokemon rather than 1 huge pokemon which may require healing mid-way through. Unlike petrel none of her pokemon have significantly deviant moves which make her relatively predictable, however most of her moves are the most powerful of their type e.g. Blizzard/Psychic/brave bird. So prioritise pokemon that will have resistance to their moves over pokemon who can deal super effective damage if you can.

This battle is a double battle against Archer and a team rocket grunt. The Scyther is strangely slow. In double battles you are unable to switch for incoming pokemon so be prepared to be on the back foot. The only difficult pokemon is the Gyarados who is extremely quick and knows bounce, coupled with high attack means that it is a mean pokemon to fight.

Your team mate Riley has an Absol, Ursaring,. However, he seems to be pretty useless throughout the fight, if you want him to be any help. Focus on the Zangoose, which knows close combat, which will wipe Riley’s pokemon out quickly. Or use his pokemon as a buffer as you pump out damage.

Jasmine

Jasmine is a defensive trainer, most steel type pokemon have high defence and that is apparent in this fight. Most of her pokemon can survive being One-hit which risks your own pokemon being hit hard in return. Her team is generally weak to fire, with fighting and ground taking a back seat as Metang and Bronzong are psychic while Skarmory is flying and Magneton knows magnet rise. I think a good level for this gym is >38 depending on the stats of your main pokemon. If you’re dependant on a fire pokemon be careful of Metang, Steelix and Bronzong as the first two know super effective moves which the latter has rain dance, an annoyance. The gym however  due to the lack of high attack pokemon can easily be beat by overleveling to 41 which allows you to sweep her whole team with 1 or 2 pokemon.  (Remember that if you use dig you can still be hit with earthquake with double damage)

Your goal in here is to shut the radio transmitter down which requires you to learn a phrase to enter the door. Each time you walk past a persian statue you will be attacked by 2 grunt, so treat each statue as a difficult trainer. The first of the two always has a koffing with explosion so make sure your pokemon are fully healed before battling.

There are a few good items

  • Revive

  • TM49 Snatch

  • Dubious Disk

  • TM79 Dark Pulse

The checkerboard pattern on the first floor is covered with voltorbs with aftermath making it a deathtrap. Do not walk through it, walk around.

Lance will heal your pokemon when you first reach the second floor.

Executive Petrel 2

Petrel has improved since the last time you fought him, he has his previous roster with only a few moves changes. However he has also added a Toxicroak to his team a high strength low defence pokemon. Due to the increasing stat to level ratio as you level up, his raticate and Stuntank are less powerful than last time you fought. His crobat as well only has the addition of U-turn which can be annoying if you are fighting with non-super effective moves. Most of his pokemon are poison type therefore utilise psychic or ground type moves. Be careful however, as his pokemon do have type deviant moves to punish the unaware. Crunch and Dark pulse against psychic types while utilising levitate and crobats flying type to avoid pesky ground types. Mix up your fight with both ground and psychic and you should be good. Pokemon level should be ~39.

The battle against Ariana happens when you try to step into the radio control room so prepare before going in. This battle is a double battle with lance as your ally. Thankfully lance is really good. He has a Dragonair and Aerodactyl which have high stats and good moves. The most difficult pokemon would be Honchkrow and Magnezone as Honchkrow has the high power Brave Bird as well as Magnezone having high defence and levitate. Due to lances major impact in the fight you can beat ariana with pokemon around level 38. However being at 40 lessens the risk of a random crit spelling doom for a key pokemon. Focus down Arbok over Hypno and then follow up by killing Magnezone and Honchkrow. Hypno, Muk and Vileplume are likely to attack lance’s pokemon thus making them low risk.

After fighting the two Rocket Executives in the hidden rocket base this gym leader should be pretty easy. While Fighting, Ground and fire can be used to sweep through Pryce’s team, fighting does this the most efficiently with only one pokemon being immune to it. If you choose to use fire you have to deal with lapras, dewgong and mamoswine. While if you pick ground types you have to deal with Lapras, Dewgong and Abomasnow.  Your pokemon should be preferably above level 45 as the mamoswine and Froslass are stronger than usual

To enter this building you need to get a team rocket uniform which can be found in the goldenrod tunnel. On the 5th floor you will fight Executive Petrel for the third time

Executive Petrel 3

Petrel is found on floor 5 of the radio tower disguised as the radio tower president so be careful.

This is the first fight with a unified strategy. All of his pokemon have toxic, a move which poisons your pokemon doubling in damage every turn it’s on your pokemon. They also know Protect which will make them much slower to kill, increasing the risk of Toxic. The other thing to worry about is that his weezing has learnt Destiny bond which will kill your pokemon when you kill it. So to stop that, switch out your pokemon if he uses it on you. Most of his pokemon are poison types making psychic and ground types effective. However his weezing has levitate and skuntank and raticate have crunch against psychic types. If you can try to utilise avoidance moves such as fly/dig to avoid moves like toxic, and switch out quickly if you are poisoned. As a reward for beating him you are given the basement key which can be used in the goldenrod tunnel.

Warehouse

The warehouse can be accessed with the basement key and found in the goldenrod tunnel. Once you enter you will have to immediately face off against your rival before you can explore the rest of the basement. Once you reach the second floor of the warehouse, you’ll have to fight a few more grunts and then meet the director.  Also remember you can pick up the Amulet coin which increases prize money by 50%, as well as TM82 Sleep talk. After talking to the director, return to the radio tower to continue fighting team rocket.

Rival Battle 3

(This rival battle assumes you picked Cyndaquil if you didn’t then either Magmar or Electabuzz will be replaced with Seadra, and the starter pokemon will be replaced with the one with a type advantage against your own. If you are poisoned by honchkrow’s toxic swap out asap. Magmar and Electabuzz have low defence so they should go down quickly. Gengar and Alakazam are the hard hitters of this fight and should be focused down. They both have powerful moves and strong status moves e.g. Hypnosis and Thunderwave.

Executive Proton 2
HeartGold SoulSilver Proton.png
HeartGold SoulSilver Proton.png

Proton is another strong trainer with strong pokemon. Strangely the strongest pokemon is Taurus which comes late in the fight and has abnormally high speed and health. Most of his other pokemon also have strange move-sets to counter other pokemon. E.g. Zen headbutt on Taurus to counter fighting types, Electrode also has explosion making him dangerous, dig can be useful to deal damage while avoiding explosion. Camerupt will be easily taken out with a single water type move while cacturne has low health making them also easy. Crobat and Taurus are the tough two with crobat always getting the first hit while taurus dealing massive damage to the unprepared.  Be careful and this fight shouldn’t be so tough, however i recommend being ~lv47 to be safe otherwise you may get into scenarios where a single miss or effect may lead to a death. Executive Ariana 3

This is the third time you’ll have fought Ariana and she isn’t as strong as her proton counterpart. She does like to swap her pokemon out rapidly so be mindful of what she might be sending out each round, resulting in you maybe making unconventional  choices which would be useful  in the case of a swap. Many people fear Milotic due to their history in Cynthia’s team however this one is very weak with low attack stats and even lower speed. Arbok’s only deadly move is earthquake while honchkrow’s constant recoil makes him pretty easy to kill. Purugly has no strong moves. And vileplume has no type-deviant moves so can be easily killed with some fire. Overly an easy fight. After the fight you can take the lift up to the observation deck where the last team rocket fight will occur

Executive Archer 2

BE VERY CAREFUL. After the fight with Archer you must immediately fight Giovani who has a whole team with him. While you do get healed in between the fights, Giovanni is a very difficult fight. Many of Archer’s pokemon have type deviant moves such as Drapion’s crunch, Gyrados’ Earthquake  or Machamp’s payback. The weakness of his team is that most of his pokemon are slow, meaning that you should focus on just maximising damage output over 1 or 2 rounds. Focussing on their weaknesses such as Gyarados’ 4x electric weakness and Scizor’s 4x fire weakness. Other than being hit by an earthquake or stone edge, the most dangerous part is that Houndoom has a focus sash, so he will always survive damage on 1 hit. He will use this extra time to utilise the sunny day/solarbeam combo or use sunny day’s increased fire boost to dish out damage using fire blast. Be careful and take him out quickly by reducing his health to 1 on the first turn to avoid prolonging the fight. His weakest pokemon are the zangoose he starts off the fight with and the Scizor with it’s fire weakness. It’s recommended to be ~lv50 for this fight otherwise you are likely to lose 1 or 2 pokemon when they are solar-beamed off the face of the earth.

Giovanni

Giovanni is very difficult. Remember that you will be unable to prepare for this fight as it occurs right after so you want to make sure your intended first pokemon is set before the Archer fight. Nidoking has amazing stats all around and will OTK most pokemon as he has a wide selection of moves (Ice Beam, Earthquake, Thunderbolt) Because of this the main type to beat him with is Psychic. Flying pokemon are unreliable in this fight and should be swapped out with few exceptions.  The best strategy is a setup strategy where your first pokemon spends a few turns improving stats (e.g. Swords Dance or Calm Mind) and setting moves (such as leech seed or spikes), this is only possible because Giovanni’s persian is his weakest pokemon by far. Read the moves below and prepare doubly for them. If you want to play it safe then consider being around lv:53.

Route 44:

Route 44 is a quiet mountain road that serves as the only path into Blackthorn City. Both the north and south paths lack any tall grass. The Ice Path is located in the east.

Items:

  • Electirizer used to evolve electabuzz

Ice Path:

The Ice path is a puzzle cave involving icy floors and boulders. The first floor contains HM07, The Magmarizer and Glacial Ore. After that head down the ladder to the rock room in which you’ll have to push boulders into holes to set up an ice floor puzzle on the floor below. Be careful pushing the boulders around as if you push them into a corner you'll be unable to move them and will have to re-enter the room.

Items:

  • HM Waterfall

  • TM13 Icebeam and Tm72 Blizzard

  • Magmarizer/ Chilled Ore

  • Nevermelt ice

BlackThorn City

The quiet mountain retreat known as Blackthorn City lies isolated in the northeast. The main attraction is the Blackthorn Gym, the final Gym in the region. North of the Gym is Dragon's Den, a training ground for Dragon-type specialists.

This town contains

  • the Super rod,

  • A move trainer which will train starter pokemon the ultimate moves (Frenzy plant, Blast burn, Hydro cannon)

  • Move trainer which will teach happy dragon pokemon Draco Meteor

  • The 8th dragon Gym

  • The Dragon Den

Clair

Compared to Giovanni her pokemon aren't dangerous due to their move types rather they just have very strong stats. In this fight as always, be careful of the highest level pokemon. Salamence has access to the powerful Draco Meteor, a powerful special move which however leaves him weakened afterwards. Salamence however has a white herb removing stat debuffs which make drago meteor even more of a pain. The Dragonairs are weak with low stats. And the Gyarados and Altaria both have 4x Effective moves being Electric and Ice. You are given Icebeam and Blizzard in the Icy Cave so put them to good use. Kingdra is a big worry however, with decent stats including weirdly high special-attack and speed. Swagger is a 100% acc confusion which forces you to make a 50% chance to hit yourself. Sometimes it is worthwhile to swap out if confused, however try to send out a type resistant to i’s damaging water and ice type moves. Remember that dragons are resistant to Fire, Water, Grass and Lighting. Overall it’s hard to deal damage without putting your own pokemon at risk so often it is better to level to Lv54 to ensure the fight goes cleanly

Dark Cave:

The dark cave has been made much more difficult as the mod creator has removed the flash TM . so you’ll be unable to obtain it until you beat the elite 4. This cave other than the Reaper cloth and a few unique pokemon doesn't really contain anything so should probably be skipped

Items:

  • Reaper Cloth (Dusclops Evolution) can be found as soon as you enter Dark cave from the Blackthorn side, just walk to the left.

Dragon’s Den:

Ecruteak Dancers:

In the Ecruteak dance centre are 7 dancers each with a single evolution of Eevee. Since they are different trainers you will get no chance to swap out after each pokemon and rather will release your first pokemon again. To prepare for this just have your initial pokemon be the highest level.
