Wandering through the Feywild’s immortal twilight is a wondrous, if not dangerous, thing, and I have found many curiosities through the years I have explored it. But no matter how hard I try, I will never compare to the discoveries of a Sylphide’s curiosity.
The first time I meet a Sylphide, I was quite taken aback. As I recall it, I can’t help but laugh, the image of it hanging upside down from it’s tail, in the middle of a path, is still vibrant in my memory. But that wasn’t the first thing I noticed. No, it was the depthless curiosity lying in those vibrant amethyst eyes. An unstoppable force that is unmissable, no matter how many Sylphide find me.
-Iris Reeves, A Stroll in the Feywild
Sylphide are a rare race of humanoid wyldfae, driven by their curiosity. They spend their solitary lives wandering the feywild, and even other planes of existence, in search of new things to entertain this curiosity, sleeping whenever and wherever they feel like. Through their thousands of years of existence, Sylphide know a lot of abstract and unknown information and wisdom about anything and everything. This, however, is never recorded and only resides in the minds of the Sylphide, leading to them being sought out for this knowledge and their ability to gather it.
Sylphide are a race constantly on the move, exploring whatever they can. Because of this and their Faerie blood, they have adapted to survive alone in the feywild and beyond. Sylphide have slender builds like elves but with slightly longer pointed ears, and are much shorter in stature; Their skin has a subtle hue of iridescent green and their eyes are full of piercingly vibrant and rich colors like amethyst and turquoise. Growing from their legs are crystals that tend to be a different color for each Sylphide; And their slender tails, with a tuft of fur on the end, are commonly used to hang or swing from due to their unexplainably light bodies.
As a Sylphide ages, they don’t change in appearance after the age of 6 like other races, but instead the crystals in their legs change color. This happens over a long period of time making almost every Sylphide have a slightly different color, with one exception. Once a Sylphide reaches 5000 all the color drains out of the crystals, and is replaced by an iridescent quality instead, signifying that they are nearing the end of their life.
Depending on the color of a Sylphide’s crystals, they will be more sought after due to how much knowledge they posses and how good they are at gathering it. This can lead some Sylphide to grow more cautious around other races as their crystals evolve but most act too childish to care.
One thing drives a Sylphide, their unquenchable curiosity. This curiosity leads them to explore anything and everything, with absolutely nothing being able to stop them. Most Sylphide will know a wide array of absolutely useless, yet, undiscovered knowledge as well as some more world changing things, but won’t be able to distinguish between what's more important. They discover things out of pure curiosity and don’t care too much about what they actually learn. The act of answering their curiosity and the discovery, is what they find important. They spend their entire lives seeking answers to questions nobody asks, and build up a wisdom that only something that has spent thousands of years asking ‘why?’ could have. Their curiosity and childish nature makes them seem young and folly to the untrained eye, but if you look a little deeper you will find a depthless understanding of the cosmos.
The life of a Sylphide is a lonely one to an outsider, but to a Sylphid its perfectly normal. When a Sylphide is born it will be cared for by its parents while they travel until it reaches the age of 6, when their curious nature has fully developed and takes over. Their curiosity leads them away from their parents and more often than not they will never see them again. As they live out their years of curiosity, they tend to stick to the wilds, meeting the odd adventurer, maybe playing a trick or two on them, and then moving on. However some do venture into cities or join up with adventures, seeking to understand them, and some even are drawn to explore what the other planes have to offer. As a Sylphide’s crystals begin to become Indigo or violet, they start to look for a mate that they can spend the rest of their lives exploring with. Though it isn’t unheard of for a Sylphide to find a mate as soon as their crystals are orange or even, for some very select cases, in the late red stage.
A Sylphide has a given faerie name at birth, and another chosen name they pick themselves. Due to their Faerie nature their true name is never revealed unless unavoidable, and sounds ancient and strange to non-faeries. Due to this, they pick another name, of any origin, that they use instead.
